As a player, Martino spent most of his career playing as a midfielder for Newell's Old Boys in Argentina, where he won several titles including the Argentine Primera División. He also played for Tenerife in Spain and for O'Higgins in Chile before retiring in 1996.
After retiring as a player, Martino began his coaching career. He has managed several teams, including Newell's Old Boys, Cerro Porteño, Libertad, the Paraguay national team, Barcelona, the Argentina national team, Atlanta United, and most recently, the Mexico national team. Martino is known for his attacking style of play and has a reputation for developing young players.
