Following his retirement from playing, he embarked on his coaching journey, initially serving as an assistant coach for his former club, Mainz 05 working with the youth teams. In 2019, he had his first role as head coach at FC Liefering who were playing in the Austrian 2. Liga.

In 2021 he switched to the Bundesliga and his former club Mainz 05, saving them from relegation in his first season. He stayed in the position until November 2023 when he stepped down via mutual consent.
