Xabi Alonso Next Job Odds: Five options for the former Real Madrid manager
Real Madrid have dismissed Xabi Alonso after their Spanish Super Cup defeat to rivals Barcelona.
The former Los Blancos midfielder, who spent eight months in charge, has been replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa following his promotion from Castilla (the club’s B team).
Attention now turns to what could come next in Alonso's managerial journey, with his next job odds explored below.
Xabi Alonso Next Club Odds
Liverpool: 11/8
Another one of Alonso's former clubs, Liverpool, have been installed as the 11/8 favourites (bet365) to be his next destination in the dugout.
Alonso was strongly linked with a move to Anfield following Jurgen Klopp’s departure in 2024, but chose to remain with Bayer Leverkusen for one more season. Liverpool instead turned to Arne Slot, who went on to deliver the Premier League in his debut campaign.
Slot’s second season has proven more challenging. Inconsistent form, difficulties integrating big-money signings, and a public falling-out with Mo Salah have all increased scrutiny on the Dutchman.
While Slot appears to have steadied the ship for now, Alonso’s sudden availability will no doubt fire the rumour mill into action over the course of the next couple of months.
Bayern Munich: 11/2
Alonso made his managerial name in Germany, where he orchestrated a stunning league and cup double at Bayer Leverkusen.
In truth, it's difficult to see the Spaniard going back to the country just yet, particularly to Bayern Munich (11/2), who are already 11 points clear at the summit of the Bundesliga under boss Vincent Kompany, who has won 23 of his 26 matches in all competitions this season, with his only defeat coming away to Arsenal.
Manchester United: 8/1
A Liverpool hero going to Manchester United? This option appears somewhat remote.
Man United are reportedly on the cusp of handing Michael Carrick the interim job until the summer, which rules out an appointment in the short-term anyway.
Perhaps the summer could be different.
Tottenham: 9/1
Tottenham could represent a more realistic Premier League destination for Alonso than Manchester United.
Thomas Frank is currently under heavy pressure and is as short as 5/4 to become the seventh Premier League managerial casualty of the season.
The former Brentford boss is feeling the heat after an inconsistent start to his Spurs reign, with the club languishing 14th in the table and eliminated from both domestic cup competitions.
Spain: 10/1
Spain are currently managed by Luis de la Fuente, who heads to North America this summer looking to triple-up with the World Cup after he won the European Championship in 2024 and Nations League in 2023.
His contract currently runs through to 2028, and it's difficult to see him departing in the aftermath of the World Cup, unless Spain, who are the favourites to lift the trophy, have a complete shocker.
Other Options
Pep Guardiola is under contract at Manchester City until at least 2027, so Alonso (12/1) would have to play the waiting game with this one.
Should the quadruple-winning Luis Enrique leave PSG, his fellow countryman would no doubt be an option at 14/1.
Newcastle are out at 18/1, while a return to Bayern Leverkusen is priced at 20/1.
