The Londoners go into the second leg on the back of a 2-2 draw with relegation-threatened Burnley, with the Irons fortunate to have to come away with anything after being 2-0 down at one stage.
Freiburg had a happier weekend, taking all three points at Bochum, with striker Michael Gregoritsch - who scored the only goal in the first leg - the matchwinner once again.
The Hammers were victorious in both group-stage meetings with Freiburg, including a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium, and will feel confident that they can overcome their German opponents, who finished second in Group A behind David Moyes' men.
Team news
Full-back Emerson injured his groin in the first leg at the Europa-Park Stadion which forced him to miss the draw with Burnley last weekend and he remains a doubt for the return leg in London.
Maxwel Cornet will also miss out through injury, while Moyes will be expected to freshen up his starting XI with the likes of Edson Alvarez, Michail Antonio and Kurt Zouma all pushing for starts.
For Freiburg, manager Christian Streich has a host of injury worries to contend with going into Thursday’s crucial encounter, with key defender Matthias Ginter a major doubt.
The likes of Noah Weisshaupt, Daniel Kofi-Kyereh, Kenneth Schmidt, Max Rosenfelder and Philipp Lienhart are also going to miss out through injury, while Jordy Malengo is also expected to be absent through illness, although he has returned to training.
Predicted Line-ups
- West Ham: Fabianski; Coufal, Mavropanos, Zouma, Cresswell; Alvarez, Soucek; Ward-Prowse, Paqueta, Kudus; Bowen
- Freiburg: Atubolu; Sildillia, Kubler, Gulde, Gunter; Doan, Eggestein, Hofler, Grifo; Sallai, Gregoritsch
West Ham vs Freiburg Tips
This is likely to be a nail-bitingly close encounter at the London Stadium, but the Hammers have the quality and the experience to overturn the first leg defeat to qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Irons have lost just one of their last 15 European ties at home, with this coming in the semi-finals of the competition in 2021, and have won four of their last seven continental home fixtures to nil.
Moyes’ men have lost one of their last 13 games at the London Stadium in all competitions and this form should put them in good stead against a Freiburg side with five defeats from their last seven away fixtures.
Only five teams in the Bundesliga have scored fewer goals on the road than Freiburg this season, while the Hammers have lost just three home games in the league, so the stats point to a difficult task ahead for the Breisgau-Brasilianer.
After lifting the Europa Conference League trophy last season, the Hammers will be full of confidence that they can rise to the big occasion and home advantage could prove crucial.
