Sunderland have promotion aspirations this season and expectations were lifted further with an impressive 2-0 win at Cardiff City on the opening weekend.
New manager Regis Le Bris saw Luke O’Nien and Jack Clarke both get on the scoresheet either side of the half-time whistle, as the Black Cats proved too strong for the Bluebirds in the Welsh capital.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday endured a tough campaign in the Championship last term but made a positive start to the new season with a 4-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.
It was the perfect start for Owls boss Danny Rohl, as his side breezed past a hapless Plymouth side with Jamal Lowe, Brendon Galloway (OG), Josh Windass and Michael Smith all getting on the scoresheet.
With both sides picking up solid wins on the opening weekend, a hard-fought contest is expected when these former Premier League sides go toe-to-toe at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
These sides met in Sunderland’s final home game of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, with Sheffield Wednesday heading back to South Yorkshire with a 2-0 victory.
It completed a disastrous run of home form for the Black Cats as they failed to win any of their last seven home games in the Championship.
Sunderland fans have not had much to cheer about on their most recent visits to the Stadium of Light, with their side scoring just once in their last six Championship home games.
Wednesday will head north brimming with confidence and knowing they can get a positive result in Sunderland after winning there in May.
The Owls have won their last three away games in the Championship, beating Queens Park Rangers, Blackburn Rovers and most recently Sunderland.
Another valuable three points on the road might well be on the cards for Wednesday on Sunday.
Having netted in the opening Championship game of the season, Windass is certainly a player to consider in the anytime goalscorer market.
Windass bagged the third goal of the afternoon against Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth, as he picked up where he left off from last season.
The 30-year-old scored the second goal in the 2-0 success at Sunderland back in May and also found the back of the net in their previous away win at Blackburn.
Having scored in all of Wednesday’s last four Championship games, there’s no reason to suggest the former Rangers and Wigan forward can’t add to his tally again on Sunday afternoon against a Black Cats side that have been poor on their own patch of late.
