Southampton vs. Man City Betting Tips: Foden to find the net at St Mary's
Manchester City are the current favourites to lift the League Cup this season and Pep Guardiola's side travel to Southampton in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Our man Tom Winch is on hand with his best bets for the game.
St Mary’s is the venue for the EFL Cup Quarter-Final clash between Nathan Jones’ Southampton and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola on Wednesday night as the visitors are expected to overcome the struggling Saints with relative ease.
It’s not been a great first few months of the 2023/2023 season for the club on the South Coast. Former manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl was sacked in November after recording just three victories in the opening 15 league matches. Nathan Jones was snapped up from Luton just a few days later, and many believed he wasn’t the man for the job, however things haven’t gone to plan at all since his arrival. The club have lost all four Premier League matches with Jones in charge, but have earned victories in both of the cup competitions.
Pep’s Manchester City side occupy second spot in the league table, they’ve won eight of the last 10 in all competitions and arrive here best priced at 1/4. These sides met in October at the Etihad and the Citizens ran out comfortable 4-0 winners on that day.
Southampton vs Man City Tips
It’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable away win on Wednesday night for Manchester City. They have plenty of depth within the squad and have far more quality than their opponents here.
Man City have played 20 games against English opposition since the opening day of the season, 17 in the league and three cup matches. They have received three or more cards in just four of those matches.
In Southampton’s last 14 matches, only Crystal Palace have received over 2 cards against them, and in the six games Nathan Jones has been in charge of, only six cards have been shown to their opposition in total.
Phil Foden is second in terms of goals scored this season for Man City with nine, only behind a highly impressive Erling Haaland. The Englishman scored in the 4-0 win over Chelsea just a few days ago and looks a nice price to score in back to back matches.
The 22 year-old has netted in the last two meetings between these two sides and should have a fair few chances to make it a hat-trick under the lights down South. Pep’s side are odds-on to score three times on the night, so backing an impressive Foden to score looks like a decent bet.
With both selections having a decent hit rate in recent times we should hopefully go close in the Quarter-Final of the cup. Southampton won’t be expected to knock the current Premier League champions out whatsoever and may have their focus on the league, they need to turn things around and fast if they want to remain in the top flight for another year.
