The race for automatic promotion in the Championship is really hotting up with 11 points separating Leicester City in first and Southampton in fourth, although the Saints do have a game in hand on the trio above them. Leeds sit third in the table, two points behind Ipswich and can be backed at 7/2 in the outright Championship winner market and as 2/7 second-favourites to earn promotion.
Things looked bleak for Sheffield Wednesday a few months ago but after five wins in their last six, the Owls have given themselves a strong chance of remaining in the division. Wednesday’s last four victories have all arrived against teams in the bottom half and there’s no denying the visit of Leeds presents a much stiffer challenge on Friday.
The hosts can be sided with at 4/1 to continue their positive run and collect the three points. The draw can be backed at 3/1, while an away win for Daniel Farke’s men is chalked-up at 8/13 with most firms.
Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Tips
Leeds have won 10 of their last 11 second-tier matches and I fancy them to get the win at Hillsborough. However, at 8/13 I think they look a little short in what could be a lively affair in South Yorkshire.
Instead, I’m getting behind Georginio Rutter to provide an assist anytime in the match at 5/2 with bet365. Only Ipswich’s Leif Davis (14) has racked up more assists than Rutter this season, who in total has 12 to his name. It’s notable that 10 of Rutter’s 12 assists have come against sides in the bottom half of the table and with this in mind I like the look of the price available with bet365.
At 10/1 with Sky Bet, I’m also having a bit of Patrick Bamford to score and Di’Shon Bernard to be carded. Leeds have scored in every game this calendar year and a good few of those have been down to Patrick Bamford’s return to form. The striker has six goals in his last nine since his return to the side and can find the net against relegation threatened Wednesday.
I’m expecting a high card count and a raucous atmosphere with the rivalry between these two teams and one player I’m hoping is booked is Sheffield Wednesday defender Di’Shon Bernard. The Jamaican has started 26 league games this campaign and has been carded in eight of those. With foul-magnets Georginio Rutter and Dan James to take care of on Friday, it would be no surprise to see Bernard collect his ninth card of this dramatic Championship season.
