Sheffield United vs. Blackburn Tips
Sheffield United take on Blackburn in a crucial clash on Wednesday night, with both teams harbouring ambitions of promotion this season. Blackburn currently find themselves in 3rd place having played two games more than Bournemouth, who are four points clear in 2nd place.
Blackburn have been going through a poor run of form and they only have one win in their last six league games; that came at home to Middlesbrough. This poor run has seen them drop off the pace for automatic promotion and now the focus has turned to consolidating a playoff place.
Sheffield United are on a fantastic run of form and this has seen them climb into the playoff spots. It’s been a season of uncertainty for the Blades, but Paul Heckingbottom seems to have found the right balance in recent weeks. United are unbeaten in their last eight games and they have won five of those. They come into the Blackburn clash on the back of a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Swansea, and they will be looking to carry on that form here.
Blackburn won the reverse fixture this season 3-1, but as previously mentioned, they come into this game in a torrid run of form. They have just three wins in their last nine matches in all competitions and they only have one win in their last five away games (this came in a 1-0 against Cardiff).
In terms of head-to-heads, Sheffield have won three of the last four but the Blades’ two year stint in the Premier League means this has been over several years.
Sheffield United have looked solid defensively in their recent games, their opponents are averaging under a goal a game in their last 10 matches in all competitions. I looked over the course of their eight game unbeaten run, Sheffield United’s opponents are averaging just 0.38 goals per game, and this defensive record will have them confident of securing a result against Blackburn. The Blades have kept six clean sheets in their recent unbeaten run of eight matches.
Blackburn themselves have been far from free scoring in their recent matches. They are averaging 0.6 goals per game in their last 10 matches in all competitions; they have failed to score in six of those matches and this doesn’t bode well for them here.
In their last 10 matches, Sheffield United are averaging 5.9 corners per game and their opponents are averaging just 2.9. Blackburn have had less corners than their opponents in five of their last 19 away matches and the quality of opposition should mean they are on the back foot for large periods of this match.
In their last five matches where they have been priced similarly to win, Blackburn averaged 1.8 less corners per game than their opponents.
The corner numbers are also favourable when looking at Sheffield’s recent home matches. In their last five home matches they averaged seven corners and their opponents averaged just three.
Sheffield have also kept a clean sheet in all of their last five home matches, scoring 10 in the process. Sheffield United will be looking to start the game quickly and impose themselves on an opponent who find themselves in a poor run of form, so I’m happy to take them to win both halves and have the most corners at a big price here, despite the opponents quality.
