Roma vs. Lazio Predictions: Back a stalemate in the Derby della Capitale

Derby della Capitale, one of the most passionate derbies in the world, will be contested this Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico, between Roma and Lazio.

Jose Mourinho has already begun to bang the drums of war, claiming Lazio have been ‘smoking cigarettes with Sarri’ whilst his Roma side played in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Roma come into this game in decent form, unbeaten in seven in all competitions, but in typical Mourinho style, there’s been four draws, and three 1-0 wins.

Lazio themselves have had some interesting form, dropping out of the Europa League after a 4-3 aggregate loss to Roma, mixed in with some league wins and a loss to second place Napoli. As ever, we’ve looked ahead to the game, and come up with two tips to go with it.

First off, we’re looking at the game to finish in a draw. The previous fixture ended in a 3-2 win for Lazio, but Roma had chances to equalise towards the end of the game. Roma have drawn five of their last 10 games, showing that traditional Mourinho steel to see games out. You’ll have to go back a month to find a game that finished with over two goals, and despite it being a derby where form traditionally goes out the window, I’m expecting the same to happen again.

You’ll have to go back to the 2019/20 season to find a draw in this fixture, where both results ended in a stalemate, but with just one point separating them in the table, I can see a draw being the outcome on Sunday.

Next up, we’re looking at Ciro Immobile to register an assist in the derby. Immobile has decent stats against Roma, scoring seven and assisting four in his 16 appearances against their city rivals. Immobile has a whopping 21 league goals this season, but I thought the price of just over evens was too short to follow. He’s only assisted three goals in Serie A in 2021/20, but two of those came in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. His overall importance to the Lazio team sees him being able to hold the ball up, as well as running in behind, and I can see him being integral in setting up a goal.
