Republic of Ireland and Greece go head-to-head for the third time in the last 17 months when they clash at the Aviva Stadium in the Nations League on Tuesday night at 7.45pm.

It's difficult to take too much from Heimir Hallgrimsson's first match in charge of Ireland given the calibre of opponent they were up against. Ireland had just 23% of the ball and managed just one shot on target against England with goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish ending any hopes of a competitive contest after all of 26 minutes.

Fans will be hoping Ireland can conjure up more of a challenge against Greece, who arrive in Ireland in a confident mood after they swept aside Finland 3-0 in Piraeus.

Greece have been installed as the 6/4 favourites to deliver their fourth straight victory over Ireland and fifth in the last six meetings. As for the hosts, they are available at 9/5 to kick-start Hallgrimsson's tenure with a win, while a draw can be backed at 15/8.

Ireland's new era got off to a losing start and I fear back-to-back defeats could be on the cards when they come up against familiar foes Greece on Tuesday.

Ireland have lost three of their last four games and failed to score in four of their last five. Stretching further back they have lost nine of their last 14 games, picking up just three wins in that time, two of which were against Gibraltar.

Greece, like Ireland, may have failed to qualify for Euro 2024 but they have won consecutive games to nil, pushed Germany in a narrow 2-1 defeat in June, and back in qualifying held France to a 2-2 draw.
