
Report: Chelsea have raked in the most but Manchester United lose out in European player transfer market

BettingOdds.com have conducted a study into the number of sales, profits, and losses every Premier League club has made in the past decade from European players, as well as finding the most and least profitable European nation by the departures of Premier League players between 2011 and 2021.
The research has found that Chelsea Football Club has totalled the largest sale of European players in this period at £489.694m, with Chelsea’s total number of European players sold or departed at 37 during this time, the average player sale standing at £13.23m. However, the 2015 sale of Fernando Torres (Spain) from Chelsea to AC Milan for £0.9m resulted in the biggest individual loss on the departure of a European player from a 2020/21 Premier League Club between 2011-2021, with Chelsea’s 2011 £52.65m purchase of the Spanish forward leading to a record loss of £51.75m. Spain proved to be the European Nation with the largest player sale loss for 2020/21 Premier League Clubs between 2011-2021, with the amount received from players sold totalling £392.818m, from £619.622m spent on the sold players for a loss of £226.804m. Belgium has proven to be the most valuable European nation with the total amount from players sold valued at £540.24m from a total of 31 footballers sold or released, with an average player sale of £17.43m. Southampton Football Club has produced the largest profit from European players sold by a 2020/21 Premier League Club between 2011-2021 with sales of £196.75m to an initial purchase amount of £129.483m amounting for a total profit of £67.267m. Manchester United claims the largest losses with the amount received from European players sold £210.766m from £406.045m spent on sold players for a margin of -£195.279m. The worst profit percentage of European players sold by 2020/21 Premier League Clubs between 2011-2021 is Aston Villa, who received £13.61m from players sold compared to a total amount spent on sold players: £186.184m for a Profit/Loss Percentage of -1268%.
For the purpose of this study, all European countries have been considered outside England, including Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The only outgoing players to have not been analysed in the study are those that retired during their stint with their respective club.
