Does the award always go to a member of the team that wins the league?
Looking back at the last 20 winners of the PFA Player of the year award, only nine of those have gone to players that played for the team that won the title that season.
How is the award decided?
The annual award is given to the player to have been judged the best that season in the Premier League. It’s decided by a vote from the members of the Professional Footballers’ Association, the PFA. The awards ceremony is normally in April or May.
The Favourites
At around 13/2 with most firms, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been instilled as the favourite to win this season’s PFA Player of the year award. The Belgian has twice scooped the prestigious prize in the past and became the first player to win it back-to-back since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 when he did so in 2020/2021.
Next up we have last season’s winner Mohamed Salah, who is hovering around the 8/1 mark with several bookmakers. The Egyptian now has two Player of the Year awards to his name and is bidding to become the first ever player to do so on three occasions.
Erling Haaland’s arrival in the Premier League is sure to attract plenty of attention from across the globe, and the Manchester City new boy can be backed at 10/1 to win the award in his first season in England. The Norwegian superstar boasted a superb record of 62 Bundesliga goals in just 67 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and he’ll also benefit from a winter break with his national side not qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.

Harry Kane has never won the PFA Player of the Year award and can be found at 12/1 to do so this term. Kane is fifth in the all-time top scorer charts in the Premier League and needs just four more to leapfrog Sergio Aguero and Andy Cole into third. His Spurs teammate Son Heung-min is slightly bigger in the market at 16/1 after sharing the Golden Boot award with Salah last season with 23 league goals, none of which were penalties.
Phil Foden and Cristiano Ronaldo are both being offered at 16/1, although the future of the latter does remain in doubt with speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz can be backed at 20/1 in his first full season on Merseyside, with his new counterpart in attack Darwin Nunez also at the same price
Who to back?
Kevin De Bruyne may be the favourite to win the 2022/2023 award, but we think there’s plenty of reasons to believe that 7/1 is a decent price. The Belgian only made 30 appearances last season, five less than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
The 31-year-old still managed 15 goals in that period, and two season’s ago he equalled Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists in one campaign. A player who has the ability to rack up the numbers, set records, and leave us salivating week-in week-out with his array of passing using every dimension of both feet.
We feel KDB was a little unlucky not to win the award last season with Mo Salah having scored two league goals fewer than De Bruyne in 2022. If the voting had taken place after the Manchester City midfielder’s four-goal haul against Wolves at the back end of the campaign, we feel it could have been a different story. The best player in the league on his day in our book, and with the other players also having a proven track record in voting for him, De Bruyne looks a solid option here.
It’s hard to argue against City making it another league title in 2022/2023 after the strengthening of their squad with the arrivals of Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Juliann Alvarez. With nine of the last 20 awards going to a player from the team who won the title, another who we think may be worth some consideration is Bernardo Silva at an attractive looking 25/1.
The Portuguese midfielder has won the title with Manchester City in four of his five seasons in England and although he might not rack up the goals and assists like some of his compatriots, he’s a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s system. Bernardo’s teammates are often saying quite how remarkable a player he is and how difficult it is to get the ball off him in training with his low centre of gravity and ability to think one step ahead before receiving the ball. After having been named in the PFA team of the year last time out, we think he could go one better this time round and collect another personal accolade in the form of the Player of the Year trophy.
