Nuno Santo's odds shorten from 25/1 to 4/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave
The curse of the Manager of the Month award has picked up another unfortunate victim in Nuno Santo after his 100% nine-point haul in August was immediately pursued by a pointless September.
As a result, goal-shy Tottenham have dropped from the summit of the Premier League table to 11th, complete with a -5 goal difference. They now find themselves below Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who were bottom last month.
Worse still, Bet Victor have slashed Santo’s odds from 25/1 to just 4/1 to be the first Premier League manager to leave.
Other bookmakers have followed suit with Santo no longer available at double-figures in the betting: he’s currently a best-priced 9/1 with Paddy Power.
While Santo is by no means the only under-fire manager following the weekend’s drama, Tottenham’s alarming slump in form is a cause for major concern.
They were torn to shreds in the opening 34 minutes against rivals Arsenal, leaking in three goals in the process. In fact, they've now conceded three goals in three straight Premier League games for the first time since September 2003 when they were managed by Glenn Hoddle.
So what was Hoddle’s fate after his hat-trick of 3+ goal losses?
He was sacked after the 3-1 defeat to Southampton, and replaced by David Pleat.
There are now question marks over Santo’s own future at Tottenham. After all, he was nowhere near the top of the club’s managerial pecking order during their farcical summer search.
The club’s leadership, direction, and identity have all been hammered over the course of the last 24 hours, however it’s difficult to see Daniel Levy pulling the trigger just yet.
Although a shock defeat at home to Slovenian side NS Mura on Thursday in the Europa League Conference could well change that ahead of a clash against Aston Villa just before the international break; which history tells us is a desperately nervous time for under-fire bosses.
We'll end on this note: worryingly for Santo, five of Tottenham’s last eight full-time managers have been sent packing in the period between October and December...
