Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United Prediction, Odds and Betting Tips: 7/1 double at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest will be looking to continue their fine start to the 2024/25 Premier League season when they face Newcastle at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon, live on Sky Sports at 2pm.

Nottingham Forest have been excellent this season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are third after 10 matches, having won five, drawn four, and suffered defeat just once.

Forest beat Liverpool at Anfield and achieved draws at Brighton and Chelsea. They are a side to take seriously and are excellent defensively. Only Liverpool have a better xGA statistic. Chris Wood has been on fire; only Erling Haaland has more Premier League goals than the Kiwi.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are a great team, but they’re significantly stronger at home. We’ve seen Newcastle beat Arsenal and draw with Manchester City this season. Newcastle have earned one win on their travels this term and are ranked mid-table for xG and xGA. Across their previous two campaigns, Newcastle have won seven times in 24 away days. They’re up against it on Sunday as they face an in-form Forest at the City Ground.

The host's only defeat was against a decent Fulham side at this venue. Raul Jimenez’s penalty was the difference that day. After cruising to a 3-0 victory here last time out against West Ham, confidence levels should be high. I’m confident Forest can cause problems for the visitors. Nuno Espírito Santo has no fresh injury concerns to worry about. It’s a squad that’s proving its worth. Backing them on the Asian Handicap looks like an angle to consider.

Forest has scored in nine of their 10 matches this term. Brighton scored twice against them, and they are the only team to do so.

Howe’s men have scored five times in as many matches on the road. They haven’t clicked in forward areas this term and clear-cut chances will be few and far between on Sunday afternoon. I’m happy to side with Forest in this encounter.

How can we ignore Chris Wood? The Forest forward is having a remarkable season and I’m confident he’ll get a chance to extend his impressive tally this weekend. Wood has scored in each of his previous four Premier League matches. He’s a man on top of his game who is looking sharp and clinical.  

At 21/10 in the anytime goalscorer market, it’s a price that I’m willing to take.  

Joelinton is brilliant. His transformation into a central midfielder has worked a charm. The Brazilian leads the way when it comes to fouls, having committed 24 fouls in 10 matches; an average of 2.60 per 90. We all know what he’s like. The Newcastle man is eager, he’s physically excellent and isn’t afraid to take one for the team.  

Forest are fouled as a team 12.45 times per 90 in the Premier League this season. There have many tricky players and they will look to do the opposition on the break. Big Joe has received four bookings this term, but while he’s not had one since playing City five games ago, it’s fair to say he’s due a booking.  

The double looks enticing. Both players are great at what they do. Wood’s on fire and Big Joe can’t avoid a physical battle. Let’s hope both are bang up for it when these sides meet.
