Next Swindon Town Manager Odds: Featuring Chris Hughton, David Artell, Danny Cowley and Liam Manning
The on-going confusion surrounding the future of Scott Lindsey as Swindon Town head coach has seen bookmaker Bet Victor open up a market on who could replace the 50-year-old should he leave the County Ground, featuring the likes of Chris Hughton, David Artell, Danny Cowley and Liam Manning as the early contenders...
Rumours surfaced late last week that Lindsey, appointed Robins boss in August, was surprisingly set to switch Swindon (8th) for fellow League Two side Crawley Town (21st), who are a handful of points above the drop zone and searching for their third manager of the season.
It’s since been radio silence from Swindon on Twitter with the club’s last tweet coming on Friday 6th January. Crawley Town, who sacked Matthew Etherington after just three games, are also yet to comment on the reports.
While it's important to note that, as of yet, nothing has been made official regarding Lindsey, it does seem very likely that he's overseen his last Swindon match as head coach.
As such, speculation is brewing over who could head over in the opposite direction, with Chris Hughton cut from 20/1 to the 6/4 favourite shortly after Bet Victor opened up the next Swindon manager odds.
The experienced manager most recently worked as a technical advisor to the Ghana national team, where he’s been touted as a possible replacement for departing manager Otto Addo.
At club level, he’s managed five different clubs, and successfully propelled both Newcastle and Brighton into the Premier League, although his last No.1 job at Forest didn’t quite go to plan after he was sacked at the start of last season, with his replacement Steve Cooper conjuring up a stunning transformation which ended in promotion to the top-flight.
David Artell memorably battled it out with Richie Wellens’ Swindon during the 2019/20 League Two season, which eventually saw Swindon crowned champions ahead of Crewe on a points-per-game basis after the campaign was ended due to coronavirus.
Artell’s Crewe joined the Robins in winning promotion to League One - he won the LMA League Two Manager of the Year award - and he then orchestrated the club’s highest league finish (12th) since 2006. However, a loss of form inflicted by the sale of key players and a limited budget meant Crewe struggled, resulting in Artell's sacking in April 2022 after Crewe’s relegation had been confirmed.
The 42-year-old has remained out-of-work since then but has spoken of his desire to return to the dugout and has been linked with a number of EFL posts. Could we now see him return to League Two with promotion-chasing Swindon? He can currently be backed as the 5/2 second favourite.
There’s then a gap in the betting to the recently dismissed Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley (12/1), who previously led Lincoln City from non-league to League One, and Swindon’s ex-boss Ben Garner who is 14/1 to return after losing his job at Charlton last month.
Como coach Marc Bircham, veteran Paul Tisdale, and Shrewsbury’s Steve Cotterill are all available at 16/1 in the market, while talented young coach Liam Manning (20/1) is seeking his first job since leaving MK Dons in December. Ex-Cardiff manager Steve Morison can also be found at the same price.
Outsiders in the betting include Grant McCann (25/1), Duncan Ferguson (33/1), and former Robins manager Luke Williams (33/1) who has Notts County top of the National League with just a single defeat in 26 games.
