Man City v Borussia Dortmund Tips: Three bets for UCL quarter-final
Live on BT Sport, Premier League leaders Man City welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad in a mouth-watering Champions League quarter final first leg. City head into this tie favourites to win their first Champions League and are as short as 1/7 to progress through Dortmund into the semi's.
This tournament has been the achillies heel to City in recent years. They’ve won everything domestically but have never managed to get over the line in Europe, with shock defeats to Lyon and Tottenham at this stage in the last two seasons they will be hoping to go further this time out.
As for Dortmund, currently sat 21 points behind rivals Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, this is an opportunity to save their season.
City go into this game with a fully fit squad. Dortmund will be without star man Sancho, with additional absentees Witsel, Zagadou and Schmelzer.
Potential Man City Starting line-up:
Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Cancelo, Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Foden, Jesus, Sterling.
Potential Dortmund Starting line-up:
Hitz, Can, Akanji, Hummels, Guerrerio, Delaney, Reus, Dahoud, Bellingham, Hazard, Halaand.
You have to side with City here, so for my main play I’m backing them to notch a couple along with them to collect at least 5 corners in the process.
The home side have been remarkable this season, winning 26 of their previous 27 games, I am not going to brush that aside just because of recent history at this stage of the competition. City have scored 2 or more goals in 8 of their last 9 games including both games vs Monchengladbach and face a Dortmund side leaking goals for fun.
Dortmund's defensive frailties have been their major downfall this season. Despite getting through the round of 16, Sevilla managed to score twice in both legs vs Dortmund and they face much better opposition here. After conceding another 2 on the weekend vs Frankfurt, I am confident City can grab a couple here.
In addition to my expected City dominance should see them produce corners. I don’t see the home side sitting off here even if they go a couple ahead and if Dortmund are there for the taking City can be relentless. Dortmund conceded 5+ corners in both games' vs Sevilla so I am hoping City can achieve the same.
I tipped this vs Leicester and he didn’t play, so I am happy to take it again but at a slightly shorter price. Gundogan not featuring on the weekend should mean he’s a guaranteed starter and will most likely last the 90 vs his former side.
The German ace already has 3 goals to his name in this competition and this price is too big to turn down considering his goal to game ratio this season. He's netted 12 times in 23 league appearances and has bagged 3 in 7 in Europe. When City are as short as 1/3, I don’t believe their top scorer should be 11/5.
I have already outlined the oppositions problems at the back so I am confident in making this our second play. Other bookies have this at around even money which is closer to what I imagined, so a nice edge here with Paddy Power.
For my longshot we head back to Paddy Power for a Bet Builder. We came close on the weekend after Gundogan's replacement failed to find the back of the net for a 60/1 poke.
Hopefully City run riot with Gundogan scoring on the way, but for the longshot I’ve chucked in an Emre Can card. I am expecting him to play RB here and he should oppose the hosts second most fouled player, Raheem Sterling.
Not only will he be up against it from the get go, RB is not Emre’s preferred position. He lacks discipline as a player and has picked up 5 yellows in 19 league starts and I think the occasion could be too much for him here.
Best of luck if you follow these tips, but as always, only bet what you can afford to lose
