Both sides were relegated from the Premier League last season and they will be expected to challenge at the top end of the Championship.
Luton remain under the guidance of Rob Edwards whereas Burnley have changed manager following Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich, with Scott Parker the man entrusted to get the Clarets back to the top flight.
Teams relegated from the Premier League tend to fare well back in the Championship, due to the advantage of parachute payments, and both Luton and Burnley will be hoping for productive campaigns.
The Hatters have lost star man Ross Barkley to Aston Villa, but they’ve largely kept the same squad and expectations have risen alongside the budget in Bedfordshire.
Burnley’s last two stays in the Championship lasted only one season. They won the title in 2022-23 and Parker has won second-tier promotions with Fulham and Bournemouth so will be confident of replicating that at Turf Moor.
These two sides should be targeting the play-offs at the very least and victory over a promotion rival would be a strong start to the campaign.
Although Luton finished above Burnley in the Premier League last season, the Clarets closed out the season stronger, suffering only four defeats in their final 11 matches.
The Hatters, meanwhile, won only one of their final 18 outings and while some may be concerned by Kompany’s departure at Burnley, Parker favours a similar possession-based approach, so it shouldn't cause too much disruption.
The Clarets picked up four points from two meetings with Luton last season, having done the same thing in the Championship in 2022/23, and are unbeaten in eight competitive meetings against the Hatters.
Burnley have won on their last four trips to Kenilworth Road and they look the likelier winners in their Championship curtain-raiser, especially given the strength in depth at their disposal.
Lyle Foster locked down the starting centre-forward role at Burnley at the back end of last season and now in his third season at Turf Moor, the 23-year-old could be set for a career-best campaign.
The South African international featured only 11 times in Burnley’s Championship-winning campaign after arriving from Belgian top-flight side Westerlo, but he made 24 appearances in the Premier League last season.
That resulted in five goals, including opening the scoring in a 2-1 win at Luton in October, and he could thrive now his sights have been lowered. Expect the youngster to establish himself in the Championship this term and he can celebrate a goal at Kenilworth Road.
