League Two Top Scorer: A look at the odds ahead of Saturday’s big kick-off

The EFL restarts this weekend, with League’s One and Two returning to the fold on Saturday and the Championship kicking off on Friday evening as West Brom travel to Bournemouth.
BettingOdds.com has been bringing you plenty of ante-post content over the last couple of weeks, and today we are continuing by taking a closer look at the odds in the League Two top scorer betting.
Who are the favourites?
Ian Henderson - Salford (8/1)
2020/21 stats:
- Apps: 46
- League Goals: 17
- Division: League Two
- Club: Salford
Salford are favourites for League Two promotion this season so it comes as little surprise to see their leading goalscorer, Ian Henderson, head up the betting in the top scorer odds at 8/1.
The veteran EFL marksman found the net 17 times for the Ammies last term, as Salford finished just outside the play-offs. Now well into the twilight stages of his career at 36 years of age, Henderson will most likely be looking to hang up the boots fairly soon, potentially even at the end of the campaign as his contract at Moor Lane comes to an end next summer.
If this does prove to be the case, Henderson will want to bow out on a high by helping Salford earn promotion to the third-tier for the first time in their history. If he can remain injury-free throughout, he certainly has the ability and experience to enjoy another rewarding campaign in 2021/22.
Danny Johnson - Mansfield (11/1)
2020/21 stats:
- Apps: 42
- League Goals: 17
- Division: League Two
- Club: Leyton Orient
Mansfield have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Danny Johnson this summer. The 28-year-old notched 17 times in League Two for Leyton Orient last time out - ending the campaign as the division’s joint-fifth highest scorer - and will be looking to replicate that form for his new employers in 2021/22.
With plenty of creativity supplying him from midfield in the shape of George Lapslie and Ollie Clarke, Johnson should relish the challenge in his new surroundings and is an interesting proposition in the market at 11/1.
Conor McAlney - Salford (12/1)
2020/21 stats:
- Apps: 40
- League Goals: 17
- Division: League Two
- Club: Oldham
Another Salford player features high up in the League Two top scorer odds. New signing Conor McAlney (12/1) has joined from nearby Oldham Athletic and will be looking to hit the ground running for his new side this term.
The former Everton trainee scored 17 goals in League Two last season, proving his quality in the division. At Salford he will lead the line in a much stronger side compared to that of his previous clubs’, so there is every chance that he can surpass his 2020/21 haul this time around.
Matt Jay - Exeter (16/1)
2020/21 stats:
- Apps: 44
- League Goals: 18
- Division: League Two
- Club: Exeter
Exeter will be hoping that this is finally the season they escape the clutches of League Two. The Grecians have made it to the play-off final on no less than three occasions in the previous four years but have lost each time, with their latest failure coming in 2019/20.
If they are to be promoted, they’ll have to hope that star man Matt Jay is on song again, just like he was last term when he found the back of the net 18 times in the league to finish third in the division’s top-scorer chart.
What’s most impressive about the 25-year-old is that he scored those goals from attacking-midfield rather than playing as the club’s main striker. It will be a challenge for him to replicate the form he displayed in 2020/21, but it’s clear that he is a cut above the rest in the fourth-tier and is therefore a player to keep an eye on.
At 16/1, he could be a good each-way bet if backing with a slightly increased stake, but if you are doing so then please gamble responsibly.
