2022/2023 Favourites
Jonson Clarke-Harris - 7/1
Leading the betting is Peterborough striker Jonson Clarke-Harris. The 28-year-old may sound like a high street solicitors firm but certainly knows where the onion bag is. Clarke-Harris fired into life at Bristol Rovers scoring 24 goals in just 42 appearances before his return to Posh. The Jamaican international had the season of his career in 2020/21, netting 31 goals and bagging the League One Golden Boot. Clarke-Harris struggled for form in the Championship last season, but a change of manager saw his find his shooting boots, scoring seven in his last 13 games. He will be a huge threat this season.
Michael Smith - 14/1
Ex-Rotherham man Smith moved to Sheffield Wednesday on a free in the summer, following the expiration of his contract at the New York Stadium. After a successful spell at Swindon, Smith really found his feet in South Yorkshire and bagged the Rotherham Player of the Season trophy last year, having netted 25 times in all competition. Can he now do the same for one of South Yorkshire's biggest clubs?
Lee Gregory - 14/1
Another Owl is next in the betting, and displays the sort of firepower that Wednesday possess this campaign. A veteran at 33-years-old, Gregory has been prolific in the lower leagues throughout most of his career, mainly at Halifax Town and Millwall and rediscovered his shooting boots in his first season at Hillsborough. He eventually finished on 16 goals in the League and will be hoping to do even better this term.
Matt Taylor - 14/1
Oxford born and bred, Matt Taylor signed for the U's in 2020 and returned to the club where he spent his formative years as a child. The 32-year-old had a great spell at Bristol Rovers, scoring 61 in 118 games for The Gas, before impressive on loan at the Kassam which was enough to earn him a permanent move. Taylor bagged 18 in each of the last two league seasons so is sure to feature near the top of the scoring charts this season for high-scoring Oxford.
We can look at last years chart to see who was hot and is likely to contend again. Obviously the likes of Will Keane, Ross Stewart, and Scott Twine have all moved up through the leagues.
2021/2022 Top Scorers

Who to back this season?
Clarke-Harris obviously has the pedigree in this division, as do Peterborough, who have top scored in this division the last two times they have been in it. The stand out 7/1 at bet365 looks large, especially when you consider he is as short as 4/1 elsewhere. Grant McCann has achieved promotion from this division before with Hull City and was the chief reason for Clarke-Harris's turn around in form last season. I think it will take something pretty special to beat him this time around.
One man who could be worth a cheeky each-way bet is Bolton front man Oladapo Afoloyan at 50/1. The 24-year-old is growing in stature and strength with each season and it appears he will be playing in more of a striker role this season, rather than the wing position we saw him in many times last year. He still managed to score 12 last season playing in that wider role and could see a more central position help him bag a lot more .
