After Willian had opened the scoring at Anfield two weeks ago, Fulham held the lead until the 69th minute before Curtis Jones levelled. Cody Gakpo added the winner three minutes later resulting in The Reds now being the odds-on favourites to go on and lift the trophy at Wembley. The Reds extended their lead at the top of the Premier League managing a comfortable 4-0 away win at Bournemouth on Sunday, with four trophies still up for grabs for Jurgen Klopp this season.
Fulham did not play in the Premier League last weekend and come into this match having had significantly more preparation time. The last time Marco Silva’s side were in action was ten days ago when they were beaten 1-0 by their West London neighbours Chelsea. The Cottagers will hope their impressive home form can carry them through on Wednesday after winning five of their last six in front of their own fans. For those who fancy Fulham to cause an upset, they can be backed at 5/1 to make it through to the final.
Team News
The hosts will be without Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi who are both away on international duty. Adama Traore remains a doubt and may be named as a substitute. Liverpool have as many as seven players missing through injury including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago, Andy Robertson and Mo Salah. Curtis Jones is a doubt after picking a knock against Bournemouth, while Wataro Endo is away with his national side.
Liverpool vs Fulham Tips
I’ve been really impressed with Liverpool’s performances in 2024 and they are currently on a run of eight games unbeaten, having won their last five on the bounce. Despite having less time to recover from their most recent outing, I’m expecting another professional showing, with once again Captain Chaos Darwin Nunez at the head of proceedings.
The first theory I’m relating to Darwin on Wednesday is to back the big Uruguayan to provide an assist in the match. Nunez set up two goals in the first leg which took his assist tally for the season into double figures for Liverpool. I think this game could really open up with Fulham needing to overturn a deficit. I envisage plenty of chances for both teams but can ultimately see Liverpool picking Fulham off with hopefully Nunez turning provider. William Hill go 4/1 on this selection, while others such as Sky Bet go considerably shorter at 2/1.
At 35/1 with bet365 I’ve also had a bit of shrapnel on Diogo Jota to Score, along with Joao Palhinha and Darwin Nunez to be carded. In my opinion Jota is the best finisher that Liverpool have, and his two goals against Bournemouth assured the fan-base that they are in safe hands after the injury to Mo Salah sustained on international duty. At 2/1 Jota looks a little overpriced to find the net and bag his 12th of the season for Liverpool in what could be a high scoring game.
With a final on the line, I’m expecting plenty of cynical fouls. I’ve picked out two players to be carded with the first of those being Joao Palhinha. The Brazilian picked up more yellows than any other Premier League player last season (14) and is giving a good go at bettering that feat this time round, with 8 in his first 18 appearances of this league campaign.
Darwin Nunez has racked up eight yellow cards across all competitions for The Reds this season. The 24-year-old has committed two fouls in each of his last five starts and it would be no surprise to see him end up in the book once again to bring home this 35/1 Bet Builder.
