Brentford vs Southampton
Brentford started their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in controversial circumstances, with Eberechi Eze’s free kick being disallowed due to an off-the-ball incident.
Still, the Bees looked sharp and had real pace and threat in attack– particularly through Bryan Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa, with the duo scoring the two goals. Thomas Frank’s side then went to Anfield and lost 2-0 in a spirited display.
Southampton have had a disappointing return to the Premier League. After defeating Leeds in the playoff final, the Saints claimed an instant promotion back to the Premier League.
Russell Martin’s side started with a tough trip to Newcastle. Despite the hosts going down to ten men after 28 minutes, Southampton failed to make their dominance count, losing 1-0 thanks to a Joelinton strike on the stroke of halftime.
Nottingham Forest were the visitors to St Mary’s last weekend in a game where Russell Martin would’ve been targeting a result. However, his side were toothless, recording just five shots (0.14 xG) to Nottingham Forest’s 23 (2.45 xG). This was even though they recorded 65% possession, with Nuno Espirito Santos frustrating the home faithful.
Brentford have had less possession than their opponents in both games – a trend I expect to be repeated on Saturday. However, in the Championship, Southampton were suspect defensively, conceding 63 goals.
Brentford will take confidence in their visitors’ poor defence and impotence in front of goal.
Prediction: Brentford win
Leicester vs Aston Villa
Like Southampton, Leicester were instantly promoted back to the Premier League after relegation. Under the management of Enzo Maresca, The Foxes won the Championship with 97 points. This prompted Chelsea to make a move for the Italian, with the trusty Steve Cooper as the man chosen to replace him.
Despite Tottenham dominating the opener, Leicester managed to salvage a point through Jamie Vardy. This was followed up by a 2-1 defeat at Fulham – a game in which the hosts had 18 shots and 1.78 xG.
Aston Villa defeated West Ham to start the season, with goals from Amadou Onana and Jhon Duran ensuring Unai Emery left the Olympic Stadium with all three points. A battling performance against Arsenal ultimately meant nothing as the Gunners took all three points. Still, there were a lot of positives to be taken from the match – particularly the performance of Morgan Rogers.
Villa should have too much quality for a Leicester side that is still lacking in quality across the pitch.
Prediction: Aston Villa win
Peterborough vs Wrexham
Peterborough missed out on promotion to the Championship after losing in the Playoff Semifinal to Oxford, despite finishing seven points clear of the U’s.
As ever, It was a summer of much upheaval for the Posh, with key players such as Ronnie Edwards and Harrison Burrows moving up the football pyramid and Josh Knight heading to Germany to sign for Hannover 96.
In typical Peterborough fashion, Darragh McAnthony delved into the non-league market looking to unearth some more gems, while in-house replacements such as Malik Mothersille will look to make an impact.
Posh were drab in their opening-day defeat at home to Huddersfield, with the Terriers outclassing them in a 0-2 victory. Back-to-back away games followed and Peterborough looked back to their best.
Darren Ferguson’s side went behind after 21 minutes but ran out comfortable 1-4 winners thanks to braces from Kwame Poku and Joel Randall. They went behind after just four minutes in the next game against Exeter, before Malik Mothersille and Emmanuel Fernandez made it 1-2 before halftime.
Wrexham came second in League Two and are unbeaten so far in League One. Phil Parkinson’s side have won both home games, beating Wycombe 3-2 and Reading 3-0, conceding a combined 3.00 in both. The 0-0 stalemate at Bolton was a backs-against-the-wall performance for the visitors.
The Red Dragons will gain encouragement from the fact that Peterborough have conceded first in all three league games and come to London Road with a little more ambition than they did at the Toughsheet Stadium.
Last season, Peterborough games averaged 3.3 goals, scoring a league-high 89 goals and conceding 61. Wrexham also scored 89 and conceded 52, for an average of 3.07 goals per game.
It should be entertaining, with both teams going for the jugular, with goals at both ends.
Prediction: Both Teams To Score and Over 2.5 goals
Accrington Stanley vs Colchester
Accrington Stanley were tipped by many for relegation to the National League, after 17 years in the Football League. A strained relationship between John Coleman and owner Andy Holt saw the legendary manager depart, with John Doolan appointed towards the end of last season.
A 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Doncaster to start the season was followed by a dramatic 3-3 draw with Harrogate, with a 3-0 cup defeat to Tranmere sandwiched in between. The goal-heavy theme continued in the 3-1 loss at Newport County, meaning over 2.5 goals has now landed in 16 of Stanley’s last 17 games.
Colchester lost key players in Jayden Fevrier and Jay Mingi in the summer but under the stewardship of the Cowley brothers have made some astute signings and look well-versed to improve on last season’s 22nd-place finish.
The U’S rushed into a two-goal lead after just nine minutes against AFC Wimbledon, but collapsed spectacularly, losing 4-2. They then beat title favourites MK Dons 2-0 in a game where MK were wasteful in attacking areas, before a 0-1 defeat against Harrogate in which Cowley’s side had 24 shots and were extremely unlucky not to score.
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals
