Blackburn vs Oxford
Much has been made of Blackburn’s summer transfer business, with their first signing coming at the end of July. There were also worries that they may struggle for goals after the departure of last year’s Golden Boot winner Sammie Szmodics, but this has not been the case.
The opener saw John Eustace’s side sweep Derby aside, winning 4-2, before dismantling a heavily rotated Stockport side 1-6 in the EFL Cup. Last week saw them draw 2-2 with Norwich in a highly entertaining game, with Yuki Ohashi scoring his third goal in as many games to level the scores late on.
The game against Derby, saw Rovers accumulate 2.05 xG while conceding 1.08 xG. They also conceded 2.06 xG against Norwich, while having 0.89 themselves.
The visitors to Ewood Park are Oxford United who have three points after two games. Des Buckingham’s side opened their season with a 2-0 home win over Norwich, in which the U’s generated 0.91 xG to the Canaries 0.83. They then lost 3-2 away at Coventry – a game that saw a 2.95-0.96 xG split in favour of the hosts.
Oxford United are full of belief in their first season back in the Championship, so the opening weeks of the season should see plenty of goals.
Best Bet: Over 2.5 goals
Norwich vs Sheffield United
It has been a summer of change for Norwich after falling to defeat against Leeds in the playoffs. David Wagner has departed, alongside key attackers Gabriel Sara and Jonathan Rowe. They’ve also received over £9 million for Adam Idah who enjoyed a stellar loan campaign at Celtic, meaning there is greater scope for new manager Johannes Hoff Thorup to hone the squad how he pleases. The business has been slow and steady, so a busy last week or so is expected.
The season started disappointingly, losing 2-0 to newly promoted Oxford United, before scraping past League One Stevenage 4-3 in the EFL Cup. A 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers followed, with talented Japanese attacker Yuki Ohashi scoring a dramatic late equaliser.
Thorup’s FC Nordsjaelland side were very entertaining last year with their games averaging 2.94 goals per game, and it appears that the 35-year-old has implemented his attacking ideologies at Carrow Road already.
Alarm bells were ringing at Bramall Lane after a relegation from the Premier League that saw them break the record for the most goals conceded in a single season. The sales of Cameron Archer and William Osula have calmed financial worries for now and Chris Wilder is building a squad ready for instant promotion back to the Premier League.
Sheffield United inflicted a 0-2 defeat on Preston – a result that cost Ryan Lowe his job. The Blades then drew 2-2 to QPR – despite being two goals to the good and in control. Kieffer Moore, Callum O’Hare and Gustavo Hamer are attacking options that will be the envy of many in the league, but the Blades back line still needs some reinforcements.
The game is one that both sides will believe they can win, so an end-to-end game should be in store.
Best Bet: Over 2.5 goals
Stockport vs Bristol Rovers
After winning the League 2 title ahead of the much-fancied Wrexham, Stockport County have continued in their rich vein of form as they sit atop the League One table after defeating Cambridge 2-0 and Blackpool 0-3.
David Challinor was brutal with his summer recruitment, allowing a host of senior players to leave, and bringing in 14 new players, including Louie Barry who enjoyed a very fruitful loan spell last season before his injury. Jay Mingi strengthened the second-best defence in League 2 last season, while midfield Lewis Bate provided a fantastic partnership with the energetic Callum Camps.
The Hatters are strong in attack. Kyle Wooton (12) and Isaac Olaofe (21) both hit double digits for goals, while Barry has started the season with back-to-back goals. Jack Diamond also compliments the attack, looking to get his once-promising career back on track.
Stockport have a strong squad and are still riding the wave from their recent promotion. Until this wave filters, Edgeley Park will be a scary place to visit. Last season saw Stockport gain 50 points at home, ending with a goal difference of +31. They have also won their last six home games, only failing to keep a clean sheet once.
Best Bet: Stockport County to win
Newport vs Accrington
Newport County and Accrington Stanley are two teams who were tipped by many for relegation to the Non-League, with both sides' seasons starting chaotically as expected.
Newport were 2-0 down after just 27 minutes at Cheltenham before Courtney Baker-Richardson and Oliver Greaves levelled the scores just before halftime. The Exiles thought they had rescued a valuable point until Joel Colwill scored his brace in added time.
In their first game at Rodney Parade this year, Newport stunned Doncaster Rovers, winning 3-1 despite being 0-1 down at halftime. It halted a run of 10 straight losses in all competitions, so Nelson Jardim will be looking to build on this result.
In their 46 games last season, Newport matches averaged exactly three goals.
Accrington finished one place and two points clear of the Exiles last season, with their games averaging 2.91 goals. Stanley also did the double over County, winning 3-0 and 1-3.
John Doolan’s side have disappointingly started this season, losing 4-1 away to Doncaster and drawing 3-3 with Harrogate. The draw with Harrogate was chaotic, with Stanley going 1-0 and 2-1 behind, before making it 3-2 in the 62nd minute. Samuel Folarin levelled the scores in the last minute, meaning Accrington are still searching for their first win of the season.
The 3-0 cup loss to Tranmere means 15 of the last 16 Accrington games have seen over 2.5 goals – a run I expect to continue on Saturday.
