Sheffield United vs QPR- Sheffield United to win
Alarm bells were ringing in South Yorkshire after a disastrous Premier League season that saw them go down with a whimper, conceding the most goals in a single Premier League season.
However, The Blades have enjoyed a tremendous summer of spending, and their team looks one that can challenge towards the top of the table again. There are some worries about their squad depth, but more additions are expected.
In the opening-day victory at Preston, Chris Wilder’s side were dominant. Proficient in attack and resilient in defence – Sheffield United made a real statement to the rest of the league.
Michael Cooper – one of the best goalkeepers outside the EFL, has signed from Plymouth. Harrison Burrows and Alfie Gilchrist are complete opposites at fullback but provide a nice balance. Burrows is a creative maestro, providing 17 assists for Peterborough in League One last season, while Alfie Gilchrist is a tenacious full back who is tough in the tackle. Harry Souttar and Anel Ahmedhodzic is a defence capable of striking fear into any attack.
Further forward, Gustavo Hamer and Vinicius Souza are the perfect midfield profiles- strong in the tackle and possessing the technical ability to drive the team forward. Ollie Arblaster and Callum O’Hare are technically excellent and provide plenty of creativity to the clinical Kieffer Moore who scored 0.55 goals per 90 in the Championship last campaign.
While QPR are expecting a better campaign this year under the stewardship of Marti Cifuentes, the 1-3 opening-day defeat to West Brom highlighted several gaps in their team – gaps Sheffield United should have the ability to exploit.
Huddersfield vs Stevenage – Huddersfield to win
After being relegated from the Premier League, Huddersfield spent five years in the Championship, finishing above 18th place just once – the 2021/2022 season where they came third. As anguishing relegation is, perhaps it was needed for a ‘reset’ for the Terriers.
Michael Duff, who has proven himself a tremendous manager at this level, has been appointed as the new manager and the feeling around the club is one of optimism. This optimism only grew after a comfortable 0-2 win at a Peterborough side expecting to be challenging up the table.
The Terriers restricted Peterborough to just 8 shots totalling 0.43 xG compared to Huddersfield’s 17 shots and 1.47 xG. Their 3-1-4-2 formation gives them a lot of control in the centre of midfield, with Ben Wiles and Anthony Evans both scoring. Michael Helik is also a threat from set pieces, scoring nine goals last season.
Stevenage fell just short of playoffs in their first season back in League One, with Steve Evans leading them to ninth position. The controversial figure left to re-join Rotherham, leaving assistant manager Alex Revell to take charge.
His first game of the season was a dominant performance, winning 1-0 over Shrewsbury, before losing 4-3 at Norwich in a highly entertaining EFL cup game. While Boro are two divisions below The Canaries, that was their ninth away game in a row without a win – a run stretching back to the 27th of January.
Port Vale vs Tranmere- Port Vale to win
Port Vale are many people’s fancies for an instant return to League One. Darren Moore has been aggressive in the transfer window, adding goals in abundance to his side. Ruari Paton arrives after scoring 17 goals for Queens Park and being named in the PFA Scotland team of the year. Lorent Tolaj arrives after 19 goals for Aldershot. Ronan Curtis signs, adding goals and creativity in the wing, as well as young, exciting talents Benicio Baker-Boaitey and Diamond Edwards.
This aggressive recruitment put them in good stead, defeating Salford 0-2 away from home in the opener. The Valiants were in control, restricting the Ammies to just eight shots.
Tranmere started the season with a 0-0 draw at home to Notts County in a dull game in which Rovers accumulated just 36%. They face a daunting trip to Vale Park to face a Port Vale side full of confidence. Nigel Adkins side had the 4th worst away record in the league last campaign, picking up just 18 points in 23 league games, losing their final game of the season 4-1 to Accrington Stanley.
Port Vale are rightly favourites (1.80) and should have too much for a Tranmere side who have shown vulnerability on the road.
Morecambe vs Gillingham- Gillingham win
Morecambe endured a tumultuous summer, starting pre-season with just three players. That soon changed in dramatic fashion, with the Shrimps announcing 15 new signings in one day. The 2023/2024 season was one of instability, but Morecambe still managed to limp to a 15th-place finish – a position they will snap your hand off for this season.
After the first full season under the ownership of American tycoon Brad Galinson saw three different managers and a disappointing 12th place finish, Gillingham are aiming for promotion this time around and started the season emphatically – dismantling recently relegated Carlisle 4-1.
The ambition has been shown this summer. Popular manager Mark Bonner, who performed miracles with Cambridge, was appointed to take the reins and the signings that followed suit have been impressive. Jack Nolan contributed 25 goals in a poor Accrington side and opened his account last Saturday. Armani Little was a key figure for AFC Wimbledon, while Elliot Nevitt scored 18 goals for Crewe last season.
The biggest signing of them all is undoubtedly the return of Bradley Dack who was on course to be a Premier League player before his injuries. In Dack and Johnny Williams, the Gills have the two most technically gifted players in the league, so the priority will be keeping the duo fit and firing.
Despite being away from home, Gillingham should be too good for an unsettled Morecambe side.
