Boca Juniors suffered heartbreak in Friday’s Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 clash, playing almost all of their game against Cruzeiro with 10 men.
They lost 2-1 in normal time to level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate before falling to defeat on penalties.
The South American giants will have to pick themselves up for this game against Estudiantes, who finished fifth last season.
The hosts also have a solid record in the recent head-to-heads between these two teams, going unbeaten in the last five meetings and winning three of those.
Boca have also been dealt a major blow with Edinson Cavani having been ruled out the game against Cruzeiro with a muscular issue.
While it has not yet been confirmed, it seems unlikely that he will have recovered in time to feature in this clash.
Too many stalemates have been Boca Juniors’ downfall this season, they have drawn five of their 11 league games, and may have to settle for another on Monday.
The quick turnaround from their away trip to Cruzeiro to this game, also on the road against Estudiantes, may catch them out.
They have drawn three of their last four league games and face a home team that is hard to catch right.
El Lion had won two games in a row 4-1, against Gimnasia and Newell’s Old Boys, before suffering back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Independiente and Atletico Tucuman.
Before that sequence they had drawn four of six games and the stalemate looks like the sensible play in this game.
Two of the last four meetings between these two teams have finished level and they could be set for another at Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi.
An injury to Edinson Cavani is the last thing that Boca Juniors will have wanted but they have a striker who has been a more reliable source of goals in the league this term anyway.
Miguel Merentiel has led the line consistently, starting 10 of their 11 matches in the top flight, and has been rewarded with five league goals.
The Uruguayan striker had seven goals in 13 starts last season and has proven his worth to the side whenever he has been called upon.
With his compatriot on the sidelines, it’s worth siding with Merentiel to find the scoresheet in what looks an intriguing clash.
