Egypt (7) and Ghana (4) may have 11 AFCON trophies between them but both countries find themselves under pressure to make it out of Group B following disappointing performances during the first wave of fixtures.
A 97th minute Mo Salah penalty rescued a 2-2 draw for 2021 runners-up Egypt in their Group B opener against Mozambique, while Chris Hughton's Ghana sunk to a shock injury-time 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, who top the table at this early stage.
Egypt are odds-on with the majority of bookmakers to bounce back with a win, although Betgoodwin are offering odds of 21/20 for this outcome outcome, while Ghana are 15/4 to stamp their first three points on the board, whereas a draw can be backed at 21/10.
Egypt vs Ghana Tips
Egypt looked rusty in their AFCON 2023 opener against Mozambique but in the end they managed to scrape a point thanks to the cool head of star man Mo Salah who slotted in a late penalty.
The record seven-time champions will now bid to step it up a gear by dispatching Ghana on Thursday. Despite failing to win against Mozambique, The Pharaohs did at least stretch their unbeaten run to six matches (four wins, two draws), while their record over the last 18 months reads: 12 wins, two draws, and just the one defeat.
As mentioned previously, while most betting sites have handed Egypt odds of around 19/20, there's definite value to be claimed in Betgoodwin's offering of 21/20.
Egypt have emerged victorious in 14 out of their previous 20 AFCON group stage encounters, suffering just one defeat in that time. Additionally, they have achieved three triumphs and a draw in their most recent four confrontations with Ghana, whose unexpected defeat against Cape Verde marks their fourth loss in the last six matches. Amidst this dismal run, they have managed a solitary victory against Madagascar.
Confidence is low in the Ghanaian ranks and a similar fate to 2021 - when they were dumped out early with one point from three games - could well be on the cards.
One area Ghana continue to struggle in is in front of goal, having fired blanks in four of their last six games, while they've scored once in their last three encounters with Egypt.
Egypt to win to nil is the way to go here, a bet that has landed in two of the last three clashes between the sides (1-0 and 2-0).
Mo Salah scored in both of those victories and I'm adding him in the mix to form a 4/1 double with bet365.
The Liverpool superstar has scored 23 goals for club and country this season, including the equaliser in Sunday's draw against Mozambique and a whopping four-goal haul in Egypt's 6-0 rout of Djibouti two months ago.
On top of that, Egypt have won 11 of their last 15 matches to nil, including four of the last six.
