The Champions League gets serious at this time of year with the knockout stages set to begin. Copenhagen have been given the unenviable task of facing Manchester City; Pep Guardiola’s side are the holders and favourites to lift the trophy once again.
Copenhagen have been competing in the Atlantic Cup, while the Danish Superliga season is set to resume in the middle of February. Jacob Neestrup’s side are 3rd in the league and just three points off top.
Manchester City are second in the Premier League but have a game in hand over Liverpool. They are also still competing in the FA Cup, so they are still able to retain the three pieces of silverware they won last season.
Dabit Khocholava and Theo Sander are unavailable for the home side. Lukas Lerager is suspended, while Birger Meling faces a late fitness test.
Pep Guardiola has had to deal with plenty of injuries to key players this season but City have a clean bill of health coming into this crucial phase of the season.
Copenhagen vs Man City Tips
The home side managed to secure qualification from the group stages ahead of Manchester United and Galatasaray. They finished eight points behind the group winners Bayern Munich but a place in the round of 16 can only be seen as a resounding success. A shock result on Tuesday night would top their earlier triumph over the Red Devils.
Guardiola’s men are the overwhelming favourites to come through this tie but there can be no room for complacency in Europe’s elite club competition. Manchester City faced Copenhagen in the group stages of this competition in 2022 and had to settle for a 0-0 draw in the away fixture but have already beaten the Danes 6-0 at the Etihad.
City are likely to go for the jugular here. They have won their last 10 matches in all competitions; picking up the Club World Cup and putting their Premier League title race in their own hands. This was a favourable draw for Pep’s side so they should dominate from start to finish.
With City in command of the football, I’m expecting to see very few throws as they look to work an opening. The home side don’t have the quality to aggressively pressure City, so the first of our betting angles is under 32.5 throws in the match.
Manchester City’s Champions League matches have seen an average 26.67 throws per game and there have been 31 or less in all six. There were 32 and 24 throws in the group stage meeting between these sides in 2022.
The second angle for our main bet builder is for Manchester City to score at least two goals in the match. They scored exactly three in all six of their group stage matches. They have also scored two goals ore more in nine of their last 10 games across all competitions.
For the longer odds bet, we are backing under 27.5 throws and over two goals for the visitors. The return of Kevin De Bruyne has made City an even more menacing attacking outfit. Erling Haaland also appeared to back to his best after coming through injury when he scored twice against Everton at the weekend. They have scored an average of 2.7 goals per game in their last 10 matches and appear to be getting better.
