Elijah Adebayo performed well in the Premier League last season. The Luton forward found the back of the net on ten occasions despite featuring for 1418 minutes. The 26-year-old is a threat in the air. He scored four headed goals in 2023/24. Two of those arrived from a corner, with Adebayo scoring five with his right foot and one from his weaker left peg.
When backing a player in the outright top scorer markets, I tend to focus my selections on teams likely to be towards the top of the division at the end of the campaign. Luton fit into that category for me. Rob Edwards’ men are joint third favourites for the title (12/1) and third most likely to achieve promotion (10/3).
Our man is the 12th favourite in this market and given how impressive he was in the top flight, I’m not sure he should be ranked that high. Adebayo averaged 0.63 goals per 90 in a competitive Premier League and the calibre of the opponent didn’t matter to the Englishman either. He scored in back-to-back matches against Arsenal and Man City. Goals arrived in matches with Newcastle, Chelsea and Brighton, where he scored a hattrick in an emphatic 4-0 win.
Luton’s style of play is perfect for Adebayo. The Hatters are constantly looking to get the ball into the box. There’s always a strong possibility that Elijah will be there or thereabouts. His size and stature will intimidate defenders in the second tier and he’ll be confident in 24/25 and will have every chance of being towards the top in the individual leaderboards come May.
Injury concerns are inevitable and he missed ten weeks of action earlier this year. If he can keep himself fit and feature in the majority of matches, then we could be in with a shout at a lovely price. He’s a goal scorer. There’s no doubt about it. Let’s cheer on the Hatter’s number 11 in the upcoming Championship campaign.
Championship Top Scorer: Elijah Adebayo
Odds: 20/1
I wanted to find a bigger-priced selection to cheer on throughout the season. Lyle Foster at 40/1 looks like an appealing play. Again, his side Burnley are expected to go well after being relegated from the Premier League and Scott Parker’s side are second favourites in the outright market behind Leeds. The South African international will spearhead the Clarets attack as they look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.
Lyle Foster hasn’t been hugely prolific in professional football. He’s still only 23 and has plenty of time to kickstart his career. He’ll be the vocal figure in an exciting Burnley forward line that may include Wilson Odobert, Anass Zaroury, Luca Koleosho and Zeki Amdouni, all who will provide Lyle with opportunities.
Burnley’s number 17 started 22 matches last season. He came off the bench on two occasions, however It was a season to forget for the club. They struggled massively and Foster scored five times in 1906 minutes. That’s not exactly an inspiring statistic, but remember that they’re back in the Championship, where they’re likely to impress and have every chance of gaining another promotion.
Scott Parker’s side don’t host any of the stronger Championship sides at home until the end of November. If Lyle can start well in the opening weeks, it sets him and his side up for a successful campaign.
I’m optimistic about Lyle Foster this season. He has the potential for an excellent campaign. There are pacey wingers on either side of him who’ll look for him inside the danger area. The 40/1 price is a little big and shouldn’t be ignored.
