Bristol City boss Liam Manning started out his managerial career with West Ham taking charge of their under 23’s from 2015-2019. Since then the 38-year-old has taken roles at Lommel in Belgium, along with spells with MK Dons and Oxford United before making the switch to Bristol City.
Manning will have been delighted with his side after they held The Hammers to a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium when the sides met 10 days ago thanks to an equaliser from Tommy Conway in the second half, but his side remain the underdogs to advance to the fourth round, priced at 13/8 to qualify and 3/1 to win the game in normal time.
The last time West Ham failed to progress past the third round in this competition was back in 2016-17 and a victory over The Robins would set up a fourth round clash with either Nottingham Forest or Blackpool. David Moyes’ men can be sided with 17/20 to get the job done in 90 minutes, while 4/9 is on show for them to qualify.
Bristol City vs West Ham Tips
The Hammers have a few issues in the final third ahead of this cup clash, with Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio being out injured, while Mohammed Kudus has made the trip to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Off the back of that team news, we have decided to steer clear of the match result market and for our main play of the evening we are backing James Ward-Prowse to record Over 0.5 shots on target at even money. This price is available with bet365 or via Sky Bet’s ‘price boost’ section of their match page.
It’s been a seamless transition to life in London after the switch from the South Coast in the summer for the former Southampton man. Across all competitions this season JWP has recorded 15 shots on target in 27 starts and against lower level opposition we think even money looks a little too big considering this bet has landed in more than 50% of his fixtures this term. Deadly from set-pieces and with several of his fellow attackers out injured, more emphasis will be on Ward-Prowse to provide in the final third on Tuesday.
Another selection that we also think could potentially be overpriced involving James Ward-Prowse is for the 29-year-old to provide an assist in the match. At the time of writing, bet365 go 7/2 that he does so.
In the Premier League this season Ward-Prowse has recorded six assists in 19 matches and is on course to break his own personal record of seven for a single campaign. Furthermore, the set-piece specialist has registered four in six Europa League matches since the end of summer and he can add to his tally across all formats here. For those looking for something at a bigger price, 8/1 is available for JWP to record a shot on target along with an assist.
