All is not well at six-time FA Cup winners Blackburn Rovers. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have won just two of their last 11 matches across all competitions (W2 D2 L7). Rovers have slipped down to 18th in the Championship table and have conceded two or more goals in seven of their last eight. The future of the extremely talented Adam Warton remains uncertain, after the club rejected bids from Crystal Palace, but Blackburn are the odds-on favourites to win the game on Monday, priced at 8/11 to do so.
Wrexham enjoyed a good cup run last season as they made it to the fourth round after seeing off second-tier Coventry City. Phil Parkinson’s side forced Sheffield United to a replay but could not get the better of the Blades at Bramall Lane. This time round the Red Dragons have knocked out Mansfield, Yeovil and Shrewsbury in this competition and will relish the chance of setting up a Hollywood tie at home to Newcastle in the fifth round. For those who fancy Wrexham to prove a potential banana skin and cause an upset, 16/5 is available with most betting sites for the visitors to grab the win.
Blackburn vs Wrexham Tips
My main selection on Monday evening is for Under 3.5 cards to be shown, which is available at 5/6 with bet365. Regular readers of my ramblings will be aware I recommended Under 2.5 cards to be shown in Newport vs Manchester United on Sunday at even money. Casemiro was the only player to be booked in that game in South Wales and in fact all four of the FA Cup ties on Sunday saw Under 3.5 cards dished out.
FA Cup ties can often yield low card-counts with teams putting less priority on this competition to the league. This is especially prominent when teams from different divisions face each other and furthermore we have a traditionally card-shy referee in charge of this game. Andy Madley has given out fewer than four yellow cards in all of his last seven FA Cup matches he has taken the whistle for, and it would be no surprise to see a repeat here at 5/6.
At 20/1 I’ve also had a few quid on Sammie Szmodics and Paul Mullin to score, along with James McClean to be carded. It’s been a phenomenal campaign for Sammie Szmodics who was priced at a whopping 150/1 with one bookmaker to be named top scorer in the Championship before a ball was kicked this season. The 28-year-old currently leads the way on 16 goals this season and is letting off an impressive 3.5 shots per game. Szmodics bagged a hat-trick in the third round against Cambridge and can find the net here against a side two divisions below.
Paul Mullin is a man that just loves playing in the FA Cup. Wrexham’s talisman has scored 10 goals in his last eight appearances in this competition and has managed a further 10 in League Two this season. Rovers have been far from convincing at the back lately and with Harry Pickering and Hayden Carter out injured, there is scope for Mullin to test the Blackburn back line.
Finally, I’ve added in James McClean to be carded. As mentioned earlier, I don’t envisage a high card-count here, but if there is one player who I’d back to find their way into the book, it’s McClean. The Irishman has been a serial offender throughout is his career with West Brom, Sunderland, Wigan and Stoke and now at the age of 34 he leads the way with the most bookings for Wrexham this
