Aston Villa welcome Champions League heavyweights Bayern Munich to Villa Park tonight in what promises to be an electric night, live on TNT Sports 1 at 8pm.

Champions League football is back at Villa Park. What an occasion it will be with Bayern Munich in town on Wednesday night. Villa Park will be full, and the atmosphere will be extraordinary. Unai Emery’s side has the capabilities to make this a memorable night, but the German giants are favourites as they head to England. 

I think this a tough encounter from a betting perspective. We know how strong Villa have been under Emery at this venue. They lost just three times here in the Premier League last season. Villa beat City and Arsenal in 2023/24 but lost 2-0 to Arteta’s men in August. Bayern scored nine in their opening fixture in this competition and currently lead the Bundesliga after five matches.

With the departure of Douglas Luiz over the summer Youri Tielemans has started every clash for Aston Villa this season. The Belgian has been busy in the middle of the park, having committed 13 fouls in seven Premier League and Champions League matches this term. Villa’s number eight has fouled an opposing player in every appearance, with multiple fouls arriving in five outings.  

The midfielder has been drawing fouls at a consistent rate. It’s 14 fouls won so far for the Belgian. Every opposition has committed at least one foul on Tielemans, meaning this selection has a 100%-win rate in the 2024/25 campaign. With a flawless success rate, I was surprised to see this priced up at 5/6.  

Jamal Musiala draws plenty of fouls, 2.55 per 90 this season. The German will operate in the middle of the Bayern attack. Tielemans will have his work cut out trying to keep the talented youngster quiet.  

Pavlovic, who is likely to start, is not afraid to get stuck in with the German committing seven fouls in his previous four starts. It’ll be a good battle in the middle of the park. Bayern are averaging 11 fouls per game so far this season.  

Michael Olise has been on fire recently for the German club. The Frenchman has scored five times across his previous four appearances. We know just how talented he is after his exceptional display for Crystal Palace last season. Olise has registered a shot on target (SOT) in each of his previous five matches. Across the 2024/25 season, Olise is averaging 1.74 SOT per 90. He looks like a big price to score against a Villa side who have failed to keep a clean sheet across six Premier League matches.  

I’ve briefly mentioned Aleksandar Pavlovic. The 20-year-old is likely to start alongside Joshua Kimmich in holding midfield. Pavlovic has received a single booking this term. He was cautioned six times across 1228 minutes in the Bundesliga last campaign; a booking every 204 minutes on average.  

I like the chances of Bayern’s number 45 picking up a card. Several players in the Villa side draw fouls consistently. The home crowd will act as the 12th man and it'll be a fiery atmosphere from the very first whistle. This could prove to be a tricky test for Pavlovic and his team. The youngster was booked at the weekend and committed three fouls the week before.
