Who have been the most successful players at the event?

Being a grass-court tournament, this event - more than others - has been seen as one where players with a strong serving game are likely to do well. In the past two generations, two players have dominated the event on the men's side of the draw. In the 1990s 'Pistol' Pete Sampras used his powerful serve/volley game to overwhelm his opponents. He would win the event seven times between 1993 and 2000 with 1996 being the only year when he didn't lift the trophy.

The other player who ruled the roost in recent times has been Roger Federer. The Swiss marvel was the man who ended Pete Sampras' run at SW19 in 2001 but wouldn't lift the famous trophy himself until 2003. This was the first of five straight years when he was crowned Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion. He would win the event on three other occasions meaning he has eight titles to his name.

Novak Djokovic claimed his sixth title in 2021.

Over on the women's side of the draw, it is Martina Navratilova who holds the record for the most wins. The US-based Czechoslovak-born player won the Women's Singles event on no fewer than nine occasions between 1978 and 1990. Steffi Graf has seven wins to her name and the Williams' sisters also had great records in South West London with Serena winning seven times and Venus five.

What happened in 2021?

The 2021 event became the 134th edition of the men's event (127th for the ladies) after the 2020 event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winner of the men's tournament was Novak Djokovic (runner-up was Italian Matteo Berrettini) and Australian Ashleigh Barty claimed the ladies' title (Czech, Karolina Pliskova was the runner-up).
