NFL Player Props: Believe in Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow trying to make the Jacksonville Jaguars active roster at the age of 33 having spent the past few years playing baseball in the Mets farm system is something for akin to Hollywood than reality but here we are. Neil Monnery thinks the idea is fanciful but stranger things have happened...
One of the most fascinating stories this off-season is can Tim Tebow actually make it in the NFL as a Tight End? There is little doubt that his on field career as a professional has been nothing short of a disappointment. He may have won a playoff game as the QB of the Denver Broncos but that would be his career highlight before an attempt to make it to the big leagues with the New York Mets.
When Urban Meyer came calling, he decided to give TE a go and is trying to earn a roster spot on the Jacksonville Jaguars. All the talk coming out of the first few days in camp seems to indicate that he’s physically looking the part but he still has a long way to go to learn the position. This shouldn’t be a surprise but it is still early days. His route running though has improved and he has shown good ability to catch the ball.
It seems like a long shot that the former National Champion QB of the Florida Gators can at the age of 33 learn a brand new position and return to the NFL nine years after he last appeared in a regular season game. Yet stranger things have happened.
He’s fighting for the third-string TE position with Tyler Davis, Luke Farrell and Ben Effefson. None of them are exactly household names. Should he make the active roster then he’ll garner plenty of attention when he steps on the field.
The Sportsbooks however clearly believe that this is all just a case of a coach giving a former player a chance. You can get positive odds for Tebow to haul in north of 12.5 yards of receiving yards. If he makes that active roster then it is a near certainty that he reaches that mark. So this bet is basically all about whether we think he makes the active roster this season.
Well when I say this season, what we really mean is breaks camp with the team. I find it highly unlikely that he is happy to be signed to a practice squad with ESPN and the SEC Network waiting for him.
I’m willing to take a shot that he breaks camp with the team and makes the active roster. I don’t see Jacksonville wasting time and energy on training him up if they weren’t going to give him every opportunity to make the 53-man roster.
Pick: Over on the Tim Tebow receiving yards market (12.5 yards) at +125 with SugarHouse, BetRivers and Unibet.
