There is a lot of smoke about the potential pairing of J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings, which only grew thicker after Minnesota traded for an extra first-round pick last week.
With picks Nos. 11 and 23 at their disposal, the Vikings seemingly have the ammunition to trade into the top-5, and many expect the Michigan quarterback to be their target.
The Vikings have been linked to McCarthy for many weeks but are now the odds-on favorites to draft him, according to FanDuel on March 18th.
Here is a look at Minnesota’s odds, along with the other four teams that could also be in the mix:
FanDuel’s Odds to Draft J.J. McCarthy
- Minnesota Vikings -115
- New York Giants +350
- Denver Broncos +430
- New England Patriots +900
- Las Vegas Raiders +1600
The Vikings let Kirk Cousins leave in free agency and signed Sam Darnold as a bridge quarterback, but there has long been a heavy expectation that Minnesota would try to draft a rookie signal-caller.
Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye are viewed as the top three quarterbacks in the draft, and McCarthy has now firmly taken hold of the fourth spot.
The Vikings will reportedly have a private workout with McCarthy, and if all goes well, many expect them to attempt a trade up to No. 4 or No. 5 in order to land him.
The New York Giants sit at No. 6, and it will be interesting to see if they join the McCarthy sweepstakes. It would be easier for them to move up a couple spots than the Vikings, and doing so would guarantee a new quarterback in New York if they have soured on Daniel Jones.
The Denver Broncos badly need a new quarterback after the release of Russell Wilson, but it could be tough for them to move up and get McCarthy. Denver has been more strongly linked to Bo Nix, and that pairing still seems to make the most sense.
The Patriots have the No. 3 overall pick, and Drake Maye is the favorite to land there, but McCarthy could be theirs if the new regime believes he is the better option. The oddsmakers think that is a longshot at this point, but Maye’s stock has been falling since the end of the college season.
The Las Vegas Raiders could also use a young quarterback prospect but the oddsmakers don’t believe they will be a serious player for McCarthy’s services.
