The Connecticut Sun are Off to a Record Start
The 2024 WNBA season has been marked by parity to open the year, both teams that participated in the 2023 Finals losing in the opening two weeks. Blowouts have been few and far between, as every single matchup is competitive.
That's made the start of the Connecticut Sun even more impressive. Connecticut is 6-0 to start the year, the lone undefeated team in the W, and off to its best start in franchise history.
What's propelling the Sun forwards, and should they be viewed more viably as a Championship contender?
For reference, here is how the Sun are currently favored by major sportsbooks.
- FanDuel: +1200 (third shortest odds)
- DraftKings: +1100 (third shortest odds)
- BetMGM: +1200 (third shortest odds)
While it's understandable that the Sun are not favored to win the championship outright, I'd argue that they are heavily undervaluing the potential of this group to win in the postseason.
It's worth remembering that Connecticut has made the Conference Finals or further 5 years in a row, including two Finals appearances (2019 & 2022). Is this the year that they put it all together? Injuries have played a key aspect in the Sun's struggles to win that elusive championship. If they can keep their core intact headed into the postseason while continuing to refine their play, it seems a real possibility for the Sun to make noise this summer.
The Sun are currently 3rd in the league in Offensive Rating, 2nd in Defensive Rating, and possess a win over the Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota's only loss on the season.
With an MVP candidate in Alyssa Thomas, one of the best scorers in the league in DeWanna Bonner, a stellar post presence in Brionna Jones, and improvement from Ty Harris and DiJonai Carrington, the Sun deserve more consideration to win the WNBA Championship than they're currently receiving.
