MLB Betting: Mookie Betts Overtakes Ronald Acuna as National League MVP Favorite after Blazing Start
It’s only been seven games, but Mookie Betts’ dynamic start to the season has caused some movement in the National League MVP race.
The Dodgers superstar began the year with +650 odds to win MVP, which was second to Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna.
But after only 33 plate appearances, Betts has now pulled into pole position with +450 odds to win the MVP, per FanDuel on April 2.
Betts is batting .520 this season with four home runs, 10 RBIs, 12 runs scored and an OPS of 1.836. He has already accumulated 1.2 WAR in those games, which has made the oddsmakers take notice.
Top Five Candidates to Win National League MVP at FanDuel
- Mookie Betts +450
- Ronald Acuna, Jr. +550
- Fernando Tatis, Jr. +950
- Freddie Freeman +1000
- Shohei Ohtani +1000
Acuna, the reigning MVP, started the season at +500 odds to win the award again and has dropped slightly.
Acuna is hitting .375 with zero home runs, two RBIs, six runs scored and an OPS of .912 through four games and 19 plate appearances. He has accumulated 0.2 WAR on the season.
It’s rare for there to be a big jump in odds this early in the season because there are still so many games left.
But Betts has been ridiculously hot and has the track record to be in the N.L. MVP race all year long.
Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Betts’ Dodgers teammates Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani could also make a run at it, along with a host of longer shots in the National League.
But for now, at least, Betts is scorching hot, which has led the oddsmakers to move him atop the list of favorites in early April.
