Legal Betting States
Sports betting is a popular outlet across the United States. In many states across the country, sports betting is legal, with Florida and Maine being the next states where sports betting is legal. In 2018, the US Supreme Court cracked down on the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (otherwise known as PASPA.) What this means is every state now has the chance to create its own sports betting laws, enforcing it in ways that are appropriate to the state.
The good news is that 30 states have passed legislation to legalize sports betting, with many others following suit. As of 2024, the current top 10 sports betting states are New York, Nevada, New Jersey, Virginia, Arizona, Indiana, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Illinois. North Carolina is planning on making sports betting and mobile sports betting legal later this year, as they've recently passed legislation allowing wagering to be made within the state.
In states with legalised sports betting, the minimum age to make a wager for online sports wagering is 21 years old. Some jurisdictions will allow 18+, but this varies from state to state.
For online sports betting, users must be physically located within the jurisdiction or state to make a bet online, through state approved platforms. It's important to note that customers do not have to be a resident of the state of where they wish to place a bet. Many regulated sports betting sites will operate in numerous markets, including college sports, sports gambling, daily fantasy sports and more.
In this article, we'll break down everything you need to know about legal sports betting across the United States. From the best sportsbooks to go for, promotions and more. Happy reading!

Arkansas Legal Online Sportsbooks
Sports betting is legal in Arkansas, and has been since November 2018. As of 2024, there are three live and legal sports betting sites for users to enjoy. Betly, Oaklawn Sports and Bet Saracen. There are three physical sportsbooks in Arkansas where bettors can place their wagers in addition to the three mobile sportsbooks. Every book can be found in one of the three casinos in Arkansas. Also, a retail sportsbook is planned for the fourth casino that is now being built in Pope County.
Up to eight online sportsbooks are permitted by Arkansas' laws governing online sports betting. If they were to open in Arkansas, a few contenders might start providing incentives and promotions for online sports betting in addition to the three that are already running. This includes Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel, BetRivers, BetMGM, and DraftKings.
Colorado Legal Online Sportsbooks
Sports betting is allowed and active in Colorado. Twenty licensed online sportsbooks are based in the state, including bet365, FanDuel, Caesars, BetRivers, and a few other regional businesses that are more established in the industry. Online sports betting has been legal in the state since November 2019. Legalization required voter approval via referendum due to Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Colorado does not permit esports betting, nor does it allow betting on high school sports or any event where most participants are younger than 18.
We've broken down briefly which Colorado online sports betting platforms come out top:
Best sportsbook for loyalty programs: Caesars. Caesars Rewards is one of the best loyalty programs available to bettors today. Users will be enrolled automatically when they create a Caesars account. Here, you can collect points to use at dedicated Caesars resorts and hotels and via the app. Their welcome bonus is extremely generous, offering up to $1,000.
Best sportsbook for sports variety: BetMGM. At BetMGM, you'll find a diverse range of sports options, better than any other sportsbook available in Colorado. Alongside the usual sports like basketball and football, you'll find options for snooker, handball, soccer and even Irish Gaelic sports including football, hurling and camogie. In Colorado, once you've signed up as a new user on the site, you can expect a welcome bonus of up to $1500.
With more partnerships and sports betting platforms being introduced, we have a feeling the future of legal sports betting in Colorado looks bright.
Connecticut Legal Online Sportsbooks
Users have enjoyed online sports betting in Connecticut since October 2021 after Gov. Ned Lamont signed new tribal gambling compacts. Here, players have three sportsbooks to choose from, including
DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics. Connecticut betting sites offer wagers on all major sports leagues as well as international competitions. College sports are open to betting, however teams from Connecticut are not eligible to bet on unless they are participating in a tournament like March Madness.
With no big-league sports teams located in Connecticut, favorites include the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and New York Jets in the NFL, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in Major League Baseball, and the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in the NBA.
As sports betting becomes bigger in the state, we expect more sportsbooks and betting platforms to be launched soon.
Delaware Legal Online Sportsbooks
In Delaware, sports betting is permitted. Following the US Supreme Court's 2018 overthrow of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, it became the first state to legalize sports betting.
These days, Delaware offers three physical retail gambling facilities plus the BetRivers app for in-person sports betting. Although Delaware was the first state to legalize sports betting online, but because state officials chose not to allow the sector to get started, it never really took off. When the state's exclusive agreement with 888 Holdings (William Hill) ended in 2023, officials signed an agreement with Rush Street Interactive, the company that runs BetRivers Sportsbook, to take 888's position.
Today, BetRivers runs three Delaware online casinos in collaboration with the three physical sites, as well as the state's only licensed online sportsbook.
Florida Legal Online Sportsbooks
Online sports betting is live and legal in Florida again. After an extended legal battle that ended in the app's suspension in December 2021, Hard Rock Bet reopened its doors to all qualified bettors on December 5, 2023. In Florida, there is only one authorized betting app: hardROck Bet
Following court decisions that ruled against the legality of sports betting in Florida, Hard Rock removed their sportsbook app. The Seminole Tribe, however, was able to successfully appeal that finding, and their repeated attempts to overturn the decision have been rejected.
Although Hard Rock Bet is the only available sports betting app in the state, Floridians have a quality online sports app to trust in. With a sleek and stylish interface, top quality graphics and easy to use navigation, this app comes up against the best compared to other legalized sports betting apps in other states.
Hard Rock Bet offers various types of parlays, proving popular among Floridians. Thanks to the flex of these parlays, the app doesn't require bettors to win every leg of their bet. Users can also access the Hard Rock Loyalty program which allows users to earn points, take part in special discounts, bonus bets, odd boosts and more.
Illinois Legal Online Sportsbooks
Online and in-person sports betting are both permitted in Illinois. The state offers eight online sportsbooks in addition to multiple in person sports betting options too. The state has become one of the most successful and competitive for online sports betting since launching in 2020.

- Best sportsbook for navigation: FanDuel. Clear and simple to use, this online sports betting app makes it easy for users to monitor wagers and place a bet at anytime.

Choosing one (or more) online sportsbooks to place your bets can be intimidating, as there are currently twelve operational sportsbooks in Indiana and more may be added soon. Here’s a closer look and comparison of top Indiana sportsbook apps based on some notable features:

- Best sportsbook for usability: FanDuel. FanDuel may be the only top sportsbook whose primary attribute is how easy it is to use. Every aspect, from choosing your bet to managing open wagers and navigating the site itself, is intuitive.
- Best sportsbook for live betting: DraftKings. DraftKings features all the traditional options you’d expect for live betting, including the ability to cash out some bets early. In addition, it has live same-game parlays.
There are already plenty of sports betting apps available in Indiana. The opening of Hard Rock Sportsbook in 2022 and Bally Bet in December 2021 will counterbalance the shutdown of Score Bet and MaximBet. There are currently 13 online sportsbooks in the state; the following choices might be the next to add to that total: Betr and Tipico Sportsbook.
The only tribal casino in Indiana, Four Winds South Bend, has announced that it would not be offering a sportsbook app anytime soon. Before an app on behalf of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians can debut, the tribe and the state will need to renegotiate as the band's agreement does not include provisions for online sports betting off of its lands.

It won't blow you out of the water compared to some of the other available sportsbook in many states across the US, but it does what it needs to to allow locals to place a bet.
There is very little possibility that more sportsbook apps will be released in Rhode Island. Compared to other states, Rhode Island law requires a more closer relationship between the state and sports betting. The app is a division of the Rhode Island Lottery, so sports betting is effectively a state government operation.
Caesars has basically dismantled the William Hill brand and may try to carry out this process in Rhode Island, so the only thing that may happen is a rebranding. Still, there's no word on a potential rebranding for Rhode Island's sportsbook app anytime soon.

The range of sports and betting possibilities offered by BetMGM is impressive, covering sports like snooker, rugby, and darts that aren't as popular elsewhere. Another well-known feature of the sportsbook is its BetMGM Rewards programme, which lets players earn points that can be exchanged for benefits and rewards.
Vermont Legal Online Sportsbooks
Vermont online sports betting launched in January 2024. The first three live sports betting apps—DraftKings, Fanatics, and FanDuel—are the only ones authorised by the Vermont Board of Liquor and Lottery.

However, the Draftkings welcome offer gives bettors the chance to earn $1,200 in bonus bets when they sign up and make a DraftKings account. If you are looking for a more social betting experience, DraftKings might be the right choice for you, as they are famous for their betting pools that allows you to place a bet against your friends.
If you are looking for a more reliable betting experience, then we suggest sticking to FanDuel. They offer great promotions and rewards, as well as same game parlays.

The law also mandated that the cities chosen to host each casino hold a referendum on the subject.
November 2020 saw the approval of referenda in four of the cities. The four casinos are as follows:
- Bristol: On July 8, 2022, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Virginia's first casino, temporarily opened. In 2024, the permanent Hard Rock Bristol is expected to open.
- Danville: On May 15, 2023, a temporary outpost of Caesars Casino Danville opened. In 2024, the permanent casino is scheduled to open.
- Norfolk: A temporary Headwaters Casino site is set to open.
- Portsmouth: On January 23, 2023, The Rivers Casino, in collaboration with Rush Street (BetRivers), opened.
Washington, D.C. Legal Online Sportsbooks
Sports betting is legal in Washington D.C, but all betting, whether online or in person, must occur at tribal casinos. As of 2024, there are 15 casinos in the state that in person gambling is legal.
Users may use these apps on-site at certain casinos thanks to partnerships with operators like Caesars and DraftKings. Before visiting a kiosk or cage, gamblers can place wagers or build bets using the sports betting sites or apps offered by other casinos.
The majority of tribes have limited their sports betting options to their retail gambling establishments due to Washington's tight sports betting laws concerning where bets can be placed.
Nowadays, a lot of places allow you to use their partner app for sports betting while on the casino property. Some even allow you to build your wager from home or anywhere else in the state before putting it at a betting cage or casino kiosk.
The list of sports betting companies in Washington, along with the casinos where they are available, is listed below:
- Betfred Sportsbook: Partnered with Silver Reef Casino Resort.
- BetMGM Sportsbook: Partnered with Emerald Queen casinos in Tacoma and Fife.
- Caesars Sportsbook: Partnered with Chewelah Casino, Muckleshoot Casino, Spokane Tribe Casino.
- DraftKings Sportsbook: Partnered with Quil Ceda Creek Casino and Tulalip Resort Casino.
- FanDuel Sportsbook: Partnered with Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort.
- Unibet Spoetsbook: Partnered with Swinomish Casino & Lodge.
Due to these laws, we don't think solely online sports betting will be legal any time soon.
