It was probably a given that Mississippi, with its long history of gambling, would be among the first to OK sports betting after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act.
More than 20 commercial casinos and two tribal venues are open to sports betting in the state, the third-largest casino market in the United States.
All legal betting in Mississippi must be done at a casino. Traditional mobile betting is not available, but many casinos have apps that can be used on casino property.
In the first 12 months of sports betting, the state saw a sports handle of $300 million with $4 million deposited into state coffers.
In 2019, a mobile sports betting bill was introduced in the state Legislature but it died before going to a vote.
