Here is a look at the three main contenders to win the 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year.
Victor Wembanyama (+125)
Wembanyama is the most ballyhooed prospect the league has had since LeBron James. The 7-foot-4 power forward/center will be the tallest player on the court for almost every game and also possesses rare coordination for a player of his size.
The Frenchman has been playing overseas throughout his career and will now join the best league in the world. Wembanyama does have room to grow as a player, and it may not always be the most seamless transition, but he is easily the most talented of his class.
San Antonio is in the midst of a rebuild and Wembanyama will be a starter — and maybe even their best player — from the jump. He dazzled in his second preseason game and it would not be a shock for him to follow the path of former Spurs No. 1 overall picks David Robinson and Tim Duncan in becoming an NBA superstar.
Scoot Henderson (+300)
Henderson was the No. 3 overall selection in the draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland dealt Damian Lillard to the Bucks this offseason, which will give Henderson the room to be an impact player from the get-go. Instead of going to college, the former 5-star recruit played the past two seasons in the G League, which could help him adapt quicker to the NBA.
Henderson was impressive when he went up against Wembanyama in a 2022 exhibition game, finishing with 28 points, nine assists and five rebounds — although it’s worth noting that Wemby went off for 37.
While scouts believe Wembanyama has more talent and a higher ceiling — and the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year odds reflect this — Henderson’s G-League experience could help him make a smoother transition to the NBA.
Chet Holmgren (+300)
Holmgren was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder but suffered a Lisfranc injury before the season and missed the entire campaign. Therefore, he has retained rookie status and has a good chance if he can stay healthy.
It remains to be seen if the Lisfranc injury is a worrying sign of things to come for Holmgren, but he played in the Summer League in July and looked good. Holmgren entered the NBA weighing just 195 pounds, and while he’s far from a finished product, the big man has put on some noticeable muscle, which is a big deal as he attempts to battle veteran forwards and centers down low.
Holmgren is an intriguing wild card in this race, not from the same draft class as the others but still eligible for rookie honors, and with the talent to make some serious noise.
Holmgren rounds out the clear top-three candidates to win NBA Rookie of the Year. Even though Brandon Miller was the second pick in the 2023 draft, he is seen as a longshot at +1400, and the NBA Rookie of the Year odds get steeper for the rest of the rookie class.
