*Odds from FanDuel Sportsbook accurate as of 10/17/2023
Jayson Tatum has the shortest odds of a player who hasn't already won an MVP award in their career; he finished 4th in MVP voting last season and 6th the year prior. His current NBA MVP betting odds of +750 could shorten further if he and the Boston Celtics perform well over the first month of the new season.
Nikola Jokic (+450)
Jokic, the reigning Finals MVP, finished 2nd in MVP voting last season after winning back to back in 2021 and 2022. Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the Serbian is the favorite across sportsbooks' NBA MVP odds. Coming off a Championship with the Nuggets, headed into a new season with a tweaked roster, it will be interesting to see how the Nuggets come out of the gates in a Western Conference that saw a significant talent influx. It's worth noting that there was at large a fatigue around Jokic last season and his MVP case, seemingly brought on by past playoff runs. Will having that title notch on his belt change that? He was fantastic last season, jostling with Embiid for the top player mantle much of the season, but a falloff in his defensive effort late in the regular season hit his case. Is there another gear he can take it to? Does he make strides as a pick and roll defender? Does the two-time MVP add something new to his game? One of the most well-rounded players in basketball, Jokic is an understandable MVP odds on favorite.
Luka Doncic (+550)
Doncic finished 8th in MVP voting last season, the lowest he's finished in the past four years as he's finished between 4-6 every other season. While it's worth noting that the top 3 players in voting last season all played fewer than 70 games, it stands out how good those teams still were, all wining 53 games or more. Injuries and games missed have been an inhibitor to Doncic's MVP cases in the past few years, and while it's not an indictment of him that the Mavericks don't have a title contention caliber roster, it undoubtedly has played a factor in how he's voted upon. It's hard to get a read on the Mavericks, entering the season with the hopes off building upon the Kyrie Irving-Doncic pairing that we saw in a limited time post-trade last season. On the other hand, they're slated to start two rookies, and their frontcourt depth remains a question mark. Health, improvements, and a more cohesive season from the Mavericks will be key if Doncic were to win MVP. US betting sites, at least, have him placed a close second to Jokic across their current NBA MVP betting odds.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (+600)
It'll be worth watching how Giannis's line shifts the closer we get to the season given the addition of Damian Lillard and how that raises Milwaukee's title odds. With a revamped offense, new coaching staff in place, and Giannis slotted to play with the best guard (and player) he's ever played alongside, this feels like a huge season for the two-time MVP. Last season, in spite of the Bucks' success in the regular season, some relative flaws, when considering the handful of the best players in the league, reared their head. Giannis' jumper and mid-range game evaporated, falling off significantly across the board; from 3 feet to the three point arc, Giannis shot roughly 35.5% last season after shooting nearly 42% the year prior, a substantial drop. With a better spaced offense, a more dynamic creator to play off of, and the messiness at the top of the Eastern Conference, this could be a statement season from Giannis as he adds to his legacy and goes all in with the Bucks after their splashy off-season. Despite the downturn in his performances last season, he is still rated as one of the absolute best in the NBA and enters the season with a strong rating amongst sportsbooks' NBA MVP odds.

How the NBA MVP is Decided
The NBA's Most Valuable Player is an award given to the best performing player of the regular season. This means a player's performance in the playoffs should have no bearing on the voting for this award. The winner is selected by a panel of 100 leading media members. Each member of the voting panel must submit a ballot ranking their top five MVP candidates. Points are awarded for each vote in descending order – a first place vote is worth 10 points. The player with the most total points is named as the MVP. Effective with the 2023-24 season, players must be on the floor for 20 minutes in at least 65 games to be eligible for the MVP award. However, two "near misses", in which the player appeared for at least 15 minutes, can be included in the 65-game count. There are also protections for players who have played 62 games and suffered season-ending injuries, as well as those affected by what the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement refers to as "bad faith circumstances".
