Austria need a positive result to continue playing at Euro 2020

A tie would probably send both Ukraine and Austria through but does that means the tie will be the end result? Neil Monnery thinks it might just be...

A proper win and you are in group game here in Romania and Ukraine and Austria face-off for the right to finish runner-up in Group C. A draw would likely send both nations through but certain unlikely result permutations would mean that would not be the case - therefore both teams are more likely to go for the win. Due to goals scored, Ukraine currently have the advantage despite goal difference being level, so a draw would guarantee them second spot in the group.

Now we’ve got that sorted - let’s look at the actual game in hand. Ukraine were involved in that thrilling attempted comeback against the Dutch in the opening round of games in this group. From two down they got level before Dumfries headed in a late winner for the table-topping Oranje.

Next up they squeaked by the fun North Macedoanian side despite at one point looking like they would run away with it. Two goals in the first half meant they were comfortable but a second-half penalty rebound from Leeds United’s Ezgjan Alioski put the game in doubt. Andriy Shevchenko’s men were never really in total control of that match and I’d be worried backing them today because of it.

As for Austria, they beat North Macedonia with two late goals in their opener before a relatively tame 2-0 reverse in Amsterdam. In that game they had more possession, more passes and a higher pass accuracy than the Dutch but only managed one shot on target. Tame.

Marko Arnautovic is available for the Austrians again after a one-match ban and I think that could be the difference between the two sides. The 32 year-old looked in imperious form when he came off the bench in that North Macedonia game and you know if he starts - he’s going to be fired up.

Picks: Even though a draw wouldn’t assure both teams of progression out of the group stages - it all but does. When that situation arises on matchday three of group stages at the Euros or World Cup - the tie often somehow miraculously happens. At +100 with Borgata - that would be my Moneyline pick.

Prop wise it is a Marko Arnautovic double-header - to score anytime (+300) and to be shown a card (+600) is my double-play should he start the game.
