Our College Football Experts' Top 3 Teams to Bet On
There are a host of teams to bet on, both through college football futures and weekly action when the regular season arrives. Here are the three top teams to wager on from our college football betting expert Kyle Odegard.
USC Trojans
In a post-Caleb Williams world, there are some wondering what the Trojans will look like in 2024. And while the loss of the NFL's No. 1 overall pick is certainly a big deal, it's important to look at the track record of coach Lincoln Riley.
He has been a maestro when it comes to churning out star quarterbacks, and the play of Miller Moss in the Holiday Bowl should give bettors a sneak peek at the team's capabilities this season. Moss threw for 372 yards with six touchdowns and a pick in a win over Louisville and will aim for more success as a full-time starter.
USC could be a value pick to win more than expected in 2024.
Alabama Crimson Tide
There is going to be a split opinion on Alabama following the departure of coach Nick Saban, but the talent is so great that it really shouldn't be that big of a disruption.
Bringing back starting quarterback Jalen Millroe is huge, while wide receiver Isaiah Bond and many key members of the offensive line will also return. The defense loses stars Dallas Turner, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold, but the pipeline is extremely strong.
It's possible that Alabama loses some momentum if new coach Kalen DeBoer can't recruit like his predecessor, but for now, the national title odds of +1400 for the Crimson Tide looks like a value play.
Michigan Wolverines
It's the year to fade the Wolverines. Jim Harbaugh is an elite coach and his departure to the NFL is a really big deal. So too are the losses of players like quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum, and defensive tackle Kris Jenkins.
Michigan should be good once again in 2024, but I have a hard time seeing them reach the upper echelon after so many changes. The Wolverines are dealing with too much turnover to make a true run at another national title, and betting against them on a weekly basis could end up fruitful.
Top 3 Players to Bet On from Our College Football Experts
QB Alan Bowman, Oklahoma State
Bowman is 24 years old and was granted a seventh season of collegiate eligibility. He will wrap his college career with Oklahoma State after throwing for 3,460 yards and 15 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in 2023.
Bowman has never been a huge statistical standout in his career, but he could be poised to put up his best college season in 2024. This will be his second year in the system, and all of this time on task gives him a big advantage over defenses that will sometimes feature 18-year-old freshmen.
The Cowboys also feature star running back Ollie Gordon, who is going to be getting major attention from defenses. It all adds up to a potentially banner season from Bowman, even if he is not this mega NFL prospect.
WR Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State
The Buckeyes are welcoming a new quarterback into the fold, but that shouldn't have a negative effect on Egbuka, the star pass-catcher.
He had 1,151 receiving yards as a sophomore before an ankle injury limited his production in 2023. Egbuka also had to battle Marvin Harrison, Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba for targets in the past, while he should be getting plenty of looks in 2024.
Everything is lining up for a monster campaign for Egbuka this year, and jumping on his player props early on seems like the smart play.
QB Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
Sanders definitely has talent, and his touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2023 was impressive. However, the lack of a strong offensive line could result in a worse-than-expected season in 2024. Sanders was sacked 52 times a year ago and finished with a pedestrian yards-per-attempt figure of 7.5.
The talent is there, but the production may not live up to the hype. For the states where college football player props are available, consider fading Shedeur Sanders in 2024.
Why Expert Insights are Invaluable for Online Betting
There are a lot of reasons why computer-generated predictions can be a fantastic resource for bettors, but the human touch is also needed. Here are five reasons why relying on our college football betting experts can help your process during the season.
Breaking News Nuance - There are a number of different factors that can vastly affect a moneyline, spread, scoring total, etc. If a coach announces a suspension of six key players, jumping on odds quickly can be valuable. A projection system looks at the full picture, but breaking news can change things in a hurry, and having human experts to break down those factors in real time is incredibly important.
Injury Updates - When a player is out, it's easy for a supercomputer to add that into their projections. But what if someone has a nagging injury that is hard to perfectly quantify? Our human experts can see how a player looks while dealing with an ankle sprain, for example, and what kind of effect that can have on the betting odds.
Short-Term Trends - Our computer algorithm uses a variety of factors to come up with its college football picks, but sometimes there are recent trends that stand out more to the human eye than a machine. If a team switched up its schematics or personnel and suddenly found a fantastic groove, that information could be critical.
Late-Breaking Weather - Nothing quite like a rainstorm to throw game plans out the window. Sometimes the chance for showers is 50/50 and it's hard to project a few days out what the conditions will be. A human expert can monitor the situation up until kickoff so that bettors know exactly the expected weather outlook heading into a game.
Emotions - Confidence can help a player, while nerves and anxiety can be a detriment. These factors can often be overstated, but it's something to bring into consideration, especially at the college football level. Is an 18-year-old ready for the bright lights in his first game? Body language can be something to consider, and computer algorithms can't judge that.
