MLB Odds: Yankees not perfect but still worth bet on pennant
After finishing the last decade without a World Series appearance, the New York Yankees are looking to remind the world that they are baseball's top dog. Can they start the 2020s out with a bang? They are the favorites at +350 on UniBet to win the World Series this year
Last season they came very close to making their first appearance since 2009. The Yankees lost in Game six of the ALCS to the Houston Astros, a team rife with cheating scandals, so the Yankees must have a chip on their shoulder. Multiple Yankees players have commented on the fact that they were denied a few World series appearances by the Astros, and that might provide the extra motivation and emotion needed to make that final push.
Gerrit Cole, of course, was the biggest Yankees addition in the offseason. The right-hander almost won the World Series with the Astros and is considered by many to be the best pitcher in the majors. Last season, Cole has an outstanding 2.50 ERA and a 20-5 record for the Astros. He will be a huge help and instant ace for the Yankees.
With offensive stars such as Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, the Yankees have a star-studded, powerhouse lineup that will be able to score plenty of runs. Judge hit 27 home runs last season and Stanton hit 38 in his last injury-free season; he’s already hurt again, though, and may miss the start of the year.
The injury to projected No. 2 pitcher Luis Severino will certainly hurt them quite a bit, as the former All-Star will miss the entire 2020 season with an arm injury. This is after he missed the majority of the 2019 season. Severino had a stellar 2017 season with a 2.98 ERA and a 14-6 record.
Injuries were quite a problem for the team last year, so the injury to Severino really puts a damper on the start of their season. They were able to overcome injuries during their last campaign, but if they want to make it to the World Series the Yankees must stay healthy. If players such as Stanton, Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu can stay healthy, this team will be much improved on their good results last year.
Manger Aaron Boone is in his third year, and this Yankees team dealt with a lot of injuries the past season and still had quite an impressive run. They seem to be a well-oiled machine that just gets it done. They are certainly one of the most consistent teams when it comes to the regular season the past few years.
The biggest issues won't be regular season wins, though they should have no problem winning over 100. At 101.5 on UniBet I would take the over. The questions always seem to revolve around the playoffs when it comes to this recent Yankees team. So, I would avoid betting on them to win the World Series. Especially since they are favorites, there are smarter bets on a team to win it all.
The Bombers could make their first World Series in over a decade, however, especially with the Astros being in such turmoil. I think that a much safer bet is the Yankees +165 to win the American League.
