Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev Tips
Carlos Alcaraz is gunning for his third Grand Slam title and his first ever Roland Garros.
This is the furthest he's ever been in Paris, beating last year's performance where he reached the semi-finals losing out to eventual winner Novak Djokovic. He has been on form however the past couple of weeks, where he's had a tough draw. He opened his campaign with a dominant victory over Jeffery John Wolf beating him 6-1 6-2 6-1. He then faced Jasper De Jong where he disappointingly dropped a set, but still won in comfortable fashion.
His next four matches were against tough opponents: Sebastian Korda, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner. Despite the tough first three opponents, he dispatched each one in straight sets. His semi-final against Jannik Sinner wasn’t one of high quality, but still provided good entertainment. The Spaniard had to fight him off and managed to in a five-set battle. As Carlos Alcaraz said afterwards, “You have to find joy in the suffering”.
The Spaniard will face Alexander Zverev in the final, where the German will attempt to win his first-ever Grand Slam. His closest attempt was back in 2020 when Dominic Thiem beat him at the US Open in a fifth-set tie break after being two sets down. Dominic Thiem became the first man to come back from two sets down in a US Open final in the Open Era, and the first since 1949. After many failed attempts from Alexander Zverev, with his last three appearances seeing him exit in the semi-finals each time, he finally secured his place in the final after beating Casper Ruud with relative ease after dropping the first set 6-2. He reacted well, winning the next three sets 6-2 6-4 6-2.
The German did have a few scares the past couple of weeks, however, where he needed five sets against both Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune. On the former, he needed a fifth-set tie break to fend off the Dutchman. Against Holger Rune, he had to win a fourth-set tiebreak to stay in the tie. Both were narrow wins, but they showed his determination and fighting spirit.
It's a tough match to predict, but I think I’ll be siding with Alexander Zverev when we’re looking at the value. WilliamHill is currently giving us an implied probability that the German has a 28.6% chance of winning this match-up. I think this should be closer to 35%, so we'll be taking the money line for Alexander Zverev.
